This schematic illustrates the novel nanosheet with three parallel segments created by the researchers, each supporting laser action in one of three elementary colors. The device is capable of lasing in any visible color, completely tunable from red, green to blue, or any color in between. When the total field is collected, a white color emerges. More luminous and energy efficient than LEDs, white lasers look to be the future in lighting and light-based wireless communication.

While lasers were invented in 1960 and are commonly used in many applications, one characteristic of the technology has proven unattainable. No one has been able to create a laser that beams white light.

Researchers at Arizona State University have solved the puzzle. They have proven that semiconductor lasers are capable of emitting over the full visible color spectrum, which is necessary to produce a white laser.

This isn't anything new. You can combine three LED's (red, green and blue) to produce white light, and you can do the same thing with a laser. Not all that dramatic.

I would also like to read something supporting post 1 statement that lasers are more efficient than LEDs - that is hard for me to believe. The last laser I operated, a green out put from Argon ion gas required about a kW of electric power and my hand stuck in its beam did not even feel any heat. I admit that was five decades ago - much better now I'm sure with solid state leaser as at least they don't melt themselves.

Übercool gadget. But will the cats chase it? More worry from pilots.

    The future of lighting?

I wonder what happens if you take a white laser to the pupil.

We are used to seeing red lasers. Although its not such a great invention but , people will be amused to see white laser lights atleast.

Looks like there might be a lot of unused bandwidth suddenly available for advertising LITERALLY "in the clouds", except for that pesky issue of it being a possible hazard to commercial aviation, until or unless pilotless planes start taking off and landing.

It might look like the collection of dozens of frequencies we usually see bundled as white, but it's three laser beams of one frequency each. This might have some of the same hazards as actinic light from welding.

A new fiber optic color or an old one?

    Fiber optical cable is clear.
