Is there any connection between the two? I vaguely remember there being one example which was a trick with some dice that results in the pattern of a trianglular fractal, but I can't remember the specifics. Does this sound familiar to anyone, or am I talking nonsense? If it is true and I'm not just imagining it, are there other relationships between the two areas? If quantum mechanics is a field where probability rules, could there also be fractal patterns in QM?
http://lodev.org/cgtutor/sierpinski.html Read down to the Random section, that's about generating the triangle with dice.
Aha, so I wasn't just imagining it. Thanks for the link. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Lots more examples. Draw a line. Move the mid point a random amount to make two lines. Repeat. You end up with a nice fractal coastline. The maximum random move sets the fractal dimension.
Probability is not involved in many (most?) of the interesting fractals. Examples of fractals (not a quote: I like the format). Examples
