The standard view of the expanding universe.

Now, two physicists at The University of Southern Mississippi, Lawrence Mead and Harry Ringermacher, have discovered that the universe might not only be expanding, but also oscillating or "ringing" at the same time. Their paper on the topic has been published in the April 2015 issue of the Astronomical Journal.

the bell shape shifts from going inward to outward from left to right.

    The universe ringing while expanding.
"The new finding suggests that the universe has slowed down and speeded up, not just once, but 7 times in the last 13.8 billion years, on average emulating dark matter in the process," said Mead. "The ringing has been decaying and is now very small – much like striking a crystal glass and hearing it ring down."

Observation of Discrete Oscillations in a Model-independent Plot of Cosmological Scale Factor vs. Lookback Time and a Scalar Field Model

We have observed damped longitudinal cosmological-scale oscillations in a unique model-independent plot of scale factor against lookback time for Type Ia supernovae data. We found several first-derivative relative maxima/minima spanning the range of reported transition-redshifts. These extrema comprise 2 full cycles with a period of approximately 0.15 Hubble times (H0=68 km/s/Mpc). This period corresponds to a fundamental frequency of approximately 7 cycles over the Hubble time. Transition-z values quoted in the literature generally fall near these minima and may explain the reported wide spread up to the predicted LCDM value of approximately z = 0.77. We also observe second and third harmonics of the fundamental. The scale factor data is analyzed several different ways including smoothing, Fourier transform and autocorrelation. We propose a cosmological scalar field harmonic oscillator model for the observation. On this time scale, for a quantum scalar field, the scalar field mass is extraordinarily small at 3x10-32 eV. Our scalar field density parameter precisely replaces the LCDM dark matter density parameter in the Friedmann equations, resulting in essentially identical data fits, and its present value matches the Planck value. Thus the wave is fundamentally a dark matter wave. We therefore posit that this scalar field manifests itself as the dark matter.

    The article concludes..........
Mead and Ringermacher say this finding must ultimately be verified by independent analyses, preferably of new supernovae data, to confirm its reality. In the meantime, their work into the "ringing" of the universe continues.

Indeed. Everything else in the universe is an approximation to a harmonic oscillator, so why not? This is the kind of cosmology I was hoping would fall out of Penrose's rings, but it never quite materialized because, like bicep, it turned to be a simple instrumentation artifact.

For the ringing to die out like that, something must be damping the oscillations, and the natural frequency is going to be significant to a number of cosmological processes, no doubt.

I can't wait to hear what Alan Guth has to say about it. Please post any info on that if you catch any.

Howdy.....Hello.....As to the question of reverberation physically universally. Yes. Not only the force density but also all the states.

A collision 'rings'.vibrates and, with vibration within bond, has layers and is structuralized, exactingly, specifically, geometrically stylistically bonded and is a harmonic oscillator by its' existing resonance's'. Consider it one of the universal structure's' with mega-galaxies, and producing 'strings'. Every action force, creates an opposite force reaction. So expansion and opposite expansion as a source. Were there to be an increase/decrease in speed expansion, opposite would be the same amount and with increase/decrease emissions, at resonance's'(vibration) mass/volume/area per density variation's', by resonance's'(vibration's') of force density volume area oscillation, per speed and intensity within layering bonded with periodicity, periodically. Squeezing and un-squeezing. Resonating compression pressure density

I'm glad you could at least make sense of that word salad... the grammar (or lack there of) made me want to vomit a little 0o'

I do not think it is RC / U; I am beginning to believe this particular poster has some real 'issues' and is hopefully under some sort of care.

Sounds like a title to a song:

Doesn't ringing like a crystal imply a solid state, therefore an absolute reference? One can't set up resonance ringing in liquid and gas states, because these phase point references are not fixed in space. The only known absolute reference is the speed of light, which is the same in all references. I would guess the crystal matrix analogy is connected to C. In other discussions, I have presented the speed of light as the ground state of the universe. The above analysis implies the same thing, but looks at just the inertial ringing and not the matrix itself.

    Ran across this presentation.
I like the explanation why the lowest frequencies are missing from the early universe.
Does this make sense to our learned fellows?

That's really interesting physics. I may not have this right but it seems to be a 4 dimensional string theory that doesn't contain a domain for predicting the particle physics. The search for the geometry was pretty cool culminating in the soccer ball analogy. The following links a paper on the CDT. If you click 'cited by' there's another recent paper by the same author.

Don't get me wrong, quite an interesting video, and just as awe inspiring that our physicists/cosmologists/theorists are able to speculate on such scenarios on the data we already have.
I'm still trying to get my noggin around it and the complexities involved.

Oh the Universe has a proposed vibration to it , how intelligent .

    All matter and energy vibrate.

So whats the significance? Really ?
