How to think and act like a businessman?

How to be a successful businessman, I mean, to invest and make a lot of money back.

    Or business woman.

This is an interesting question. Just imagine, at the turn of the century, one of the goals of middle class America was to own a business (the other was to own a piano). I think it's now to be a Slum-Lord?

The first thing to ask yourself is if you want to make Profits or Spoils:
    (A) To make a Profit you'll need to offer a valued good or service to people at a price they're willing to pay voluntarily.
    (B) If Spoils is your thing, then you'll want to find a Regulatory captured market (Medicine, Law, Hair Dressing, Arranging Flowers, Taxi Driver, selling Liquor - you know, any business that requires a State Licence that is in limited supply). Spoils can also be made by becoming the person who develops and sells new Licences. Forcing people to pay you to open a business, is itself a 'business'/racket. Of course, then there's Spoils that can be made 'Managing' all this rent-seeking. That can pay extremely well.

The thing about Category B, that many people finds quite appealing, is Spoils are taken from the people in Category A to pay for Category B. Being in Category B you can pretty much offer shit on a stick and people have to eat it. Not only that, they'll pay you to eat it. If they don't like it, well tough.

Now, think about the types of people who go into Category A and those that go into Category B. Which one are you? Most people who are successful in Category B, would have went bankrupt LOOOOONG ago had they entered Category A. That's why it's important you figure out which Category you fit into.

As an aside, I was talking with a Medical student the other day and she relayed a story about a man who was upset about his medical condition. See, he went into the doctors to have something done about his back. He had a slight 'kink' in his neck. Well, one botched unnecessary "Free" surgery later (via a Public Hospital) and he's now a paraplegic. Luckily for him, the Spoils making hospital needn't worry about being sued as their lawyers have hand crafted water tight contractual agreements between the patient and the hospital such that if, in the event of a botched surgery, you're tough out of luck.

    So there's an investment.
If you can buy a State medical licence - you can start making money. Or, better yet, sell the licence.

I think carrying a knife bloodied from the backs of your acquaintances is probably the single most notable accoutrement of business.

    Metaphorically speaking, of course.

I've talked to people who have attended this school for business. I'd think you might want to look into attending it as well.

For over 100 years, Dale Carnegie has helped people overcome fears, develop speaking skills, and become more effective. Experience Dale Carnegie Training in-person at a center near you, or Live Online from anywhere

I like to delineate making money by efficiently providing a good or service at an agreeable price point (Profit), and stealing (Spoils - aka: Booty/Loot).

Example Profit: You own a BBQ stand. You sell hotdogs. You do a great job, people come from far and wide to buy these dogs. You're providing society with a good and/or service they desire. You're doing so in an efficient and sustainable manner. You're not stealing from anyone or acting fraudulently. In effect, your profit is a signal that what you're providing is virtuous.

Example Spoils: You own a gun. You threaten to shoot someone if they don't give you what you want or don't do what you want them to do. That's spoils.

Well, that isn't much of a description, and it depends on your definition of "a lot of money". But in general, a successful businessperson needs to be knowledgeable of his or her business. He or she needs to understand the drivers the business (i.e. the 3 P's, product, people, and processes). They must be able to see the big picture. Two, he or she needs to be able to lead people. They need to be able to get things done and done well. And most importantly, they must be committed and persistent. Successful business people don't' give up easily.

And you actually think that and your previous post make any kind of sense? Michael, you are far from a successful businessperson, you are far from being a businessperson period. So why are you giving out advice on how to become a necessary businessperson?

I owned my own business for over 30 years. I wasn't very rich but I was very satisfied with what I was doing. I did what I liked not for the money but for the ability to do something for others that helped them. So at times you need to figure out if all your interested in is money then get involved with stocks and bonds or other investments like real estate to gain allot of money.
