Is the U.S. too big?

Is the U.S., as a country, too big or varied?

Would we be better off to be composed of several different countries like Europe for example?

Maybe we should have a country composed of California, Oregon and Washington? One made up from the NE states, one from the southern "Bible Belt" states, the Mid-West would be another country, etc.

Moving the Bible Belt states out would remove most of the divisive religious issues out of politics for the remaining countries.

The Coastal West states along with the NE would have most of the wealth and educational bases covered and everyone could just buy food from the remaining agricultural "countries" which would be free to discriminate and move off the grid to their hearts content.

    What do you think?

I think it would be a bad idea at least from the standpoint of the economy. Europe is a good example. If Europe (euro zone) was one country, the problem of Greece would be much easier to handle.

That is the main advantage of a larger country but it is also a reason that problems like that constantly come up. Greece isn't Germany and doesn't act like Germany so bailouts will be continual.

Maybe it's better to just like Greece deal with the repercussions from its own decisions.

In the case of the U.S. if there were smaller countries the economy would improve as there would no longer be continuous wars and the associated costs of a greatly bloated military.

Government would be local so it's less likely to have a "corporate Washington" at the local levels thus more of the peoples business would get done.

Individual countries would be more similar (within that country) so there would be less divisiveness. Outside of the Bible Belt country religion wouldn't be inserted into every political discussion.

Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas would still be at the bottom of every category but at least their influence over anyone else would be minimized.

China is the largest country on Earth human wise and is about the same size as America. It doesn't split up its country into other countries but does have provinces like America has states and in China that has been working for centuries now. So I do not see why America should be split into separate countries when it is working just fine, to a degree, as it is now. Those wanting to divide this country up are only looking to make more money for themselves as they would need to set up something like America has already with a Congress and President. What would splitting away from America actually gain anyone? Perhaps that new country would turn to dictatorship and try to endanger the rest of the countries around them, who knows.

You are worrying that the new countries would turn to dictatorship while at the same time using China as an example of keeping the country together. China is an authoritarian country you realize?

I think I addressed in a post above what would be gained from breaking up the country.

In Australia, we often discuss making New Zealand the seventh Australian state.

I'm prepared to be very generous when the requests come in. If necessary, I'm prepared to let go of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and for a limited time only Arkansas and if they act within the next hour I'll throw in Oklahoma.

    OK...Alaska too...

USA should give back Alaska to Russia and Hawaii to the native Hawaiians and it would be just the right size to give back the lands to the native Indians as well and go back to England where they came from.

LOL, we have been down this road many times before Youreyes. Being a Putinophile, you are just angry the US along with Allied powers put an end on Putin's dreams of global domination.

As made known to you many times before, Alaska was purchase from Russia 148 years ago. So if your Russia can pay the price, I sure. I'd say sure. I'll sell Alaska to you. But remember, Sarah Palin comes with it. Come to think of it Sarah Palin and Putin would probably become best buddies, kissing buddies. Both are maniacal idiots.

Since you live in the US, you should know the US isn't Mother Russia. The people of Hawaii petitioned the US for admission in a real plebiscite, unlike the fake plebiscite Putin conducted after his troops invaded Crimea. Further, the indigenous people of the US have signed treaties with the US government and as a result have limited sovereignty over tribal lands.

One more thing, and you should know this, the US is a very ethnically diversified place. Contrary to your claim, most Americans didn't come from England. Most Americans were born in America and their ancestry is very varied. My ancestors came from Sweden. At least 10% of the population have ethnic origins in Africa. Unlike your Mother Russia, the US is a very ethnically diverse country. So as usual Youreyes, you need to get your facts straight.

Florida and Texas. We need to keep Mississippi and Alabama and the like, for the river ports, and Alaska is a good place. We could give Florida to Cuba - sell it as the other way around.

We'd have a problem when the Texas economy collapsed - without US government support they won't last five years - but Mexico will help us keep a lid on the place.

River ports are too high a price to pay. Florida has nice beaches but I agree with letting Texas go

It might take a little compromise and negotiation but we can end up with a more enlightened country in the end
