It's nonsense about the Moon. It's lunacy by definition.

I know we've been to the moon... I've been there myself:

and if we haven't been to the moon, how do we know that Rita Repulsa is there, planning to conquer Earth?

What evidence would convince Mr. Skeptic that people really did go to the Moon, I wonder?

I vote we send him to the moon

Given that he also feels Physics and Science has contributed nothing to society, I would bet he is willing to forgo the space suit

This classic sketch by Mitchell and Webb says all that needs to be said.

Not only did man land on the moon in the way they told and showed us, but we are still gathering data from the moon because of those moon landings.

There is one definitive way to show that we landed on the moon..

The Laser Ranging Retroreflector experiment was deployed on Apollo 11, 14, and 15. It consists of a series of corner-cube reflectors, which are a special type of mirror with the property of always reflecting an incoming light beam back in the direction it came from. A similar device was also included on the Soviet Union's Lunakhod 2spacecraft. These reflectors can be illuminated by laser beams aimed through large telescopes on Earth. The reflected laser beam is also observed with the telescope, providing a measurement of the round-trip distance between Earth and the Moon. This is the only Apollo experiment that is still returning data from the Moon. Many of these measurements have been made by McDonald Observatory in Texas. From 1969 to 1985, they were made on a part-time basis using the McDonald Observatory 107-inch telescope. Since 1985, these observations have been made using a dedicated 30-inch telescope. Additional measurements have been made by observatories in Hawaii, California, France, Australia, and Germany.

Laser beams are used because they remain tightly focused for large distances. Nevertheless, there is enough dispersion of the beam that it is about 7 kilometers in diameter when it reaches the Moon and 20 kilometers in diameter when it returns to Earth. Because of this very weak signal, observations are made for several hours at a time. By averaging the signal for this period, the distance to the Moon can be measured to an accuracy of about 3 centimeters (the average distance from the Earth to the Moon is about 385,000 kilometers).

The Laser Ranging Retroreflector experiment has produced many important measurements. These include an improved knowledge of the Moon's orbit and the rate at which the Moon is receding from Earth (currently 3.8 centimeters per year) and of variations in the rotation of the Moon. These variations in rotation are related to the distribution of mass inside the Moon and imply the existence of a small core, with a radius of less than 350 kilometers, somewhat smaller than the limits imposed by the passive seismic and magnetometer experiments. These measurements have also improved our knowledge of changes of the Earth's rotation rate and the precession of its spin axis and have been used to test Einstein's theory of relativity.

These reflectors had to be placed by hand and aligned by hand. Those reflectors are still there and have been used quite extensively since they were placed.

Some of the results of firing lasers at reflectors that were placed on the moon:

Lunar laser ranging measurement data is available from the Paris Observatory Lunar Analysis Center,[8] and the active stations. Some of the findings of this long-term experiment are:

    • The Moon is spiraling away from Earth at a rate of 3.8 cm per year.[6] This rate has been described as anomalously high.[9]
    • The Moon probably has a liquid core of about 20% of the Moon's radius.[3]
    • The universal force of gravity is very stable. The experiments have constrained the change in Newton's gravitational constant G to (2±7)×10−13 per year. [10]
    • The likelihood of any "Nordtvedt effect" (a differential acceleration of the Moon and Earth towards the Sun caused by their different degrees of compactness) has been ruled out to high precision,[11][12] strongly supporting the validity of the Strong Equivalence Principle.
    • Einstein's theory of gravity (the general theory of relativity) predicts the Moon's orbit to within the accuracy of the laser ranging measurements.[3]

    Ergo, you are wrong.

Ah but this poster doesn't believe in lasers, you see, because they are a product of modern physics, which he considers to be worthless.

If we didn't go to the Moon, how did we get all those Moon rocks and Moon dust?

That we went to the moon is certain. I watched it happen. It happened because Sputnik and the cold war happened first, and also because John Kennedy wanted it to happen, and brave folks like Neil Armstrong made it happen. It didn't happen overnight, and it didn't happen without many casualties along the way, but it did happen with the benefit of less computing technology than you folks now carry around in your pockets for the purposes of having advertisers and others spy on where you go, who you talk to, what you buy or shop for, or read.

That there is still intelligent life on Earth is what is really in question. If we really went to the moon, there would be, like, more pictures of the moon on Facebook, right?

FYI, the internet didn't happen overnight either. This is the generation that left you with that.

If we didn't go to the moon why do I have a moon rock? Was I given this rock that they sold me only to find out it is a fake?

Kittamaru: Glad I took the time to read all the Posts. From your Post #34
I was going to mention that reflector.

BTW: A friend of mine said the following.

I don't think the US went to the Moon either, the lying bastards. I think they went to Mercury and filmed themselves on the terminator.

Actually, if you watch the rather excellent documentary about Wallace and Gromit's trip there you'll see that the Moon is indeed made of cheese.

The only "crushing" thing here is your wilful ignorance.

Sorry to hear you are crushed. I hear Red Bull gives you wings, so perhaps a little Red Bull would let you recover from your depression.
