Also, check out Mark Knopfler's solo albums - they're pretty good as well.

dire straits were the essence of rock and roll. get money for nothing, brothers in arms, calling elvis, the planet of new orleans etc. try listening to them. one of the best bands ive listened to.

I believe "Dire Straits" is one of the few bands that carried over the British rock traditions of the 70s into the 80s. Certainly, their music is way behind "Pink Floyd", "Genesis", "Queen", in its expressive power and influence on English rock music in general, but anyway I would number them among the top ten British rock groups. However, as hard as I tried for many years, I almost gave up to extract much meaning from their texts.

    Also: Tunnel of Love.

They played alot of the typical long songs that were characters and standards for the era. They aren't incredible, but they had some good tunes that will always be remembered.

Dire Straits are simply one of the vest ever Rock bands. All the tracks people have mentioned are simply superb.Money for nothing video set the standard for all the rest. Mark Knopfler solo has done some really excellent material, his latest, 'ragpickers dream is a good solo album to start with, 'Golden Heart' does not have a bad track on it. Hope you get to know and enjoy the band as much as i have.

Dire Straits were possibly the best rock and roll bands of the late 70's, all their music was original - combining blues, rock and jazz - and obviously all of them were very talented at what they did. Dire Straits consists of: Mark Knopfler, John Illsley, Hal Lindes, Alan Clark, David Knopfler, Chris White, Paul Franklin, Danny Cummings, Phil Palmer, Chris Whitten
