Yes, it is easy to become slaves to our chattel as it all requires storage, maintenance and insurance at the least. Technology becomes obsolete at an astounding rate.

My method of contending with some of the concerns is to buy proven and durable goods and technology so that I do not have to replace them as often. I have done the last of my gratuitous shopping for this year, a cordless lithium ion powered hand vac and an all in one HP computer to replace my 4 year old laptop that is starting to give early warning signals. They are both in transit at present. Both were well researched and well reviewed so I have confidence that they will meet my expectations.

I have some time ago stopped looking for 'new' things to enhance my life and now just replace those things which make my life easier as and when the need arises. I am now beginning to further reassess and downsize the chattel in my life. There should be enough for a rather decent yard sale next year. Use it or lose it is my new motto.

IF that works for you, that's fine for you. It is not true for me.

What I do is every time I want to buy something, I think it over very carefully if I should buy it or not, and then I don't buy it.

Nothing - nothing the "man in charge" CAN do to make it better.

It's a people problem - we put too much stock and value on material possessions / acquisition of wealth, and too little effort into the pursuit of knowledge and betterment of society as a whole

Although some 'men in charge' and some not in charge have tried to:

Indeed, but they cannot "force" this change upon anyone; they can only speak what they believe and know and hope that people are smart enough to listen.

Unfortunately... well, money speaks very loudly... just look at the Koch brothers for evidence of that...

Guilty as charged... i supose... ie... "C" average was good enuff for me in school... an i did as my generation has been warned for many years... dont count on Soc. Sec. - aquire wealth insted... so bein responsible/not merely a dreamer... takin care of me an mine has been a priority... an wit that atitude/"luck"... me an wife has always been able to aford our needs/not be a drain on others... an that lifestyle/atitude has now alowed us to be even bigger contributors to society thru carefuly chosen charities.!!!

I dont keep up wit the latest smart-phone gadgets... but more power to the younger generation... i say... out wit the old an in wit the new.!!!

What if I'm not buying something to fulfill some psychological need, but rather a practical one? Should we stop innovating because a few people are addicted to shopping?

Thing is... I'm 26 years old heh

There is a difference between wanting something for a practical purpose and simply wanting for the sake of having...

Case in point - wanting a house is practical - a place to sleep, eat, live, and generally have shelter, a family, etc. that is yours.

These rich so and so's that go out and buy five or six houses... why? What practical purpose do they serve?
I could understand two or even three, especially if you travel a lot to certain destinations... but good grief...
