I seem unable to resist watching tho it is very frustrating. Arrow is & Smallville was so different from the comics that if they had changed all the names of people, places, etc, they shouldn't have needed permission from DC Comics to produce & air the shows. The "No cape & no flying" in Smallville is just utterly stupid. As are the Lost scenes in Arrow. If they must tell such a different story, why don't they make it about new different characters? In Gotham, why make Bullock so corrupt when a new character would have worked better? Why is Selena a few years older than Bruce & Montoya 15 or 20 years older than Bruce? 1 of the important poignant aspects of the Batman origin is his parents were killed by an ordinary mugger so that is thrown out for TV. Depicting the murder of Bruce's parents should have taken 4 or 5 times as long. Ads for Flash seem to show that 5 or 10 people know Barry's secret. Why???
It is only frustrating if you want or expect a faithful recreation of what you read in the comics. But television is a medium unto itself, and so it is only right that they do what works better not just for television but for their non comic-book fans, as well as retaining enough of the detail that comic-book fans would require to keep them interested. But they are rarely, if ever, supposed to be faithful recreations, and disappointment only comes if that is what you expect. Even shows like The Walking Dead are not faithful to the comic books, despite being only a few years apart in their creation. And Joss Whedon had sightly different versions of Firefly between the TV series and the Movie... Subtle changes so that what worked on TV could work as a standalone film for the uninitiated. Treat the TV and even the cinema versions as being based on the comic books rather than being part of the same canon. Because they are not the same canon. DC have a "cinematic universe" that I understand is different to their comic book universe... Similar in some respects but different in others. As for not needing permission of DC comics etc, if it is influenced by their works then you would need their permission, even if you change the names, or else lawsuits await. I don't expect anything. I wouldn't be surprised if they have Superman shooting webbing from his wrists & swinging on it & killing every criminal he encounters. But why call that character Superman. It does not make sense. Except they think more people will watch any character called Superman than most new characters. IF it is different enough, it is a different story with different characters which does not require permission. Perhaps I should have said if they had other names rather than if they changed the names.
I think that what happens now i mean the cinemaverses of marvel and DC is fantastic. im so exited about it
