Not really a superstition... but I do believe quite strongly that ones locus of control plays an important aspect in how they perceive the world around them and how they act/integrate with it.

Do any of you remember this story? Sports people tend to be quite ritualistic and superstitious about any number of things.

The afterlife is real. When you die, the universe judges you based on if you followed the Golden Rule, and if you did, you enter a new dimension where whatever you want for yourself comes true. If you did not follow the Golden Rule, then when you die, you just cease to exist, permanently.

You will cease to exist period! If you didn't follow the Golden Rule, then you lived a life without love.

Does anyone here pay any mind to the superstition that if you walk past a penny on the ground, you are leaving your luck behind? I used to always pick up pennies, and for a time, the bank was paying $6.00 for $5.00 worth of pennies, far and beyond any interest rate being paid on savings or GIC's. Then, as of Feb. 4, 2013, the Royal Canadian Mint ceased distribution of the penny and businesses were no longer required to give them in change although they must still accept them if tendered. Cash transactions are now rounded to the nearest nickel while all debit and credit transactions still calculate to the cent. Go figure.

The interesting thing is that while I used to be reluctant to walk past a penny because of that childhood expression learned, since our government made the coin obsolete, I feel quite relieved of the burden of the superstition. That, and there are far few pennies to be found lying about of late. :scratchin:

From my work with horses I have observed that to the horse, once is an anomaly and the second time for anything is the beginning of a pattern. After three introductions of any situation, the horse begins to anticipate and respond according to it's nature or within the parameters as presented by the trainer.

My thoughts are that humans are quite similar to the horse in this regard.

The first time something takes place, we take notice. We may not understand save to be aware that 'this is new'.

The second time it occurs, our brain will seek similarities between the first and second incident and identify a correlation.

By the third time we encounter a situation, if we observe a correlation, our brain will leap to the conclusion that there is a causation in the correlation, and without full comprehension, a superstition is born, especially if our observation is corroborated by another individual.

"Same Thing Happened To Me", by John Prine, a musical interlude, for your listening pleasure.

These are all to ward off the beast. Do for fortune not fear.

If you hold your breath past a cemetery to not be cursed you already are with the beast.

If you hold your breath through a tunnel your wishes are certainly taken into consideration. Virtue holds the key to desire.

I believe that religion has something to do with superstitions. Some people also make up stories just to frighten others.

Superstition is the beginning of religion. I deliberately ignore superstitious practices, and it doesn't cause me any angst at all. We need to purge superstitions from our psyche. Let it go.

You know what really pisses me off? The idiots who honk their horns in a tunnel.

I agree with your seniments for , as just one example, the Bible is such a made up story that people believe in it yet there's nothing in it that is a fact but only writings of men telling others what they should do.

I disagree, there are things in it that are facts, but that doesn't make the whole thing true.

I can't say that I harbor any true superstitions. Black cats, walking under a ladder (done countless times during my DIY projects!), broken mirrors, three on a match...none of them bother me in the least. As mentioned up-thread, I also say "Gesundheit" but rather than the oft implied "bless you" I mean it to wish the literal translation of "health". Not that wishing is a particularly rational of course but it's a social nicety that strikes me as a tad less confrontational than "keep your snot to yourself!"

The most important superstition i have is never having anything to do with females. I was right to, as it was proved over time.

Female of the species is more deadly than the male.

Some people have some weird lifes, and i was glad i was never into them.

But my main one, was avoiding females and i was proven right.

There is a superstition from days of old, about women on a ship being 'bad luck' which is completely logical. One female among a crew of fellows could only become an object of dissent over time, and little to be done about it, even if she were a nun, unless perhaps she were long past her menses. Female hormones are detectable and men cannot help their own awareness at the subconscious level, even though they can make a conscious decision not to be distracted by same.

Biology is a complicated subject, and some, like andy1033, find life to be far more comfortable without needless complications. For those without 'needs', it is quite logical to to avoid such distractions.
