    '''What are you currently researching?
I am researching how spontaneous human combustion is explained by 'brown fat', which is very different from 'white fat'. 'White fat' stores energy, 'but brown' fat turns energy into heat. I am also exploring body mass, weight loss and gain during the day.''

    Thoughts?

I think it's more to do with a build up of reactive chemicals which get secreted on the skin, when it dries out, the oxidizing chemicals react in a similar manner that rocket fuel reacts with any organic material. But at least it has finally been explained what causes the wick effect to occur in those bizzare cases of non smoking victims.

Well gee. I wonder how long this will be in the science section. You just won't give up on this silliness.

    Oh yeah, post reported.

    An actual scientist said this.
His name is Dr Karl Kruszelnicki. Aaaand what are your qualifications....? Are YOU a scientist to challenge his ideas?

I am not a scientist, but unlike (apparently) Dr. Karl I am not an idiot.

What is wrong with his idea? It is true that brown fat converts stored energy into heat. If you don't know that, you need to consult a high school biology textbook.

So... if a scientist said that the best way to lose weight was to stick the barrel of a loaded .357 in your mouth and pull the trigger, you'd believe him?

Because... that's what you just said... argumentum ab auctoritate is a fallacy for a reason...

Which chapter in that high school biology textbook is the one that talks about people bursting into flames like the human torch.

Of course not. That would be psychopathy.

We know that brown fat cells store energy and convert that into heat. If something gets too hot, it will auto-ignite. Ever had a magnifying glass?

And they don't say that. That's like talking about fatal car crashes in a car magazine for promoting new cars. Just because it isn't mentioned, doesn't mean what is known cannot cause something such as SHC if something goes wrong.

I think this person has comic book of The Human Torch open inside their text book, and has learned everything about the premise of the comics and nothing about the premises of Biology.

The scariest part of this is that little innocent babies have much more brown fat on them than adults - probably, to be safe, we should keep infants in the refrigerator.
