If Assad believes that in the end the west will be unwilling to mount the kind of response needed to change the game, then yes.

Easy. We believed that lying bastard Tony Blair.
We used to trust our Prime Ministers. Never again.

    Southampton Ph@ck!

    Tony, what have you done?

On the west side of The Pond, rumor has it we're opening a war sometime in the next twelve hours. Thing is, I can't tell if Congress will actually forestall the president. There is some posturing in the Capitol, but it's really hard to tell what the dissent is worth in practical terms.

Ugh... is all I can muster.

So, if Obama has 'concluded' that the Syrian government was behind the chemical attacks, why his hesitation to act, do you suppose?
Is it because he fears we may end up in a long conflict?

He fears the law of unintended consequences and rightly so. Syria has the potential to get real nasty real quick. And unfortunately US credibility and that of our allies still bears huge scars inflicted by the George II administration.

Ever play the Game of Chess?
Check is not a "horrible position" that you "find yourself" in,
it is the "horrible position" that you "maneuvered yourself" into.

This particular "Chess Match" was well into the "Game" before "The Arab Spring"
or "Benghazi" or "HillaryGate or "Eric Snowden" and will not end with Syria.

Your third link, from 2012thebigpicture, quotes an old article from the Daily Mail,
which quotes Alex Jones' Infowars, which got its information from some Malaysian hackers.
I think we can safely disregard that one.

The Parliamentary vote was really interesting to watch. What effect will this have on the 'special relationship'? It is a horrible position. On the one hand, is the Assad regime is using chemical weapons, something has to be done. However, I don't believe our intervention there has anything to do with that. White Phosphorous is a nice excuse to get good and indignant. And even if we do intervene, bombing them isn't exactly a sensible solution.

It's such a delicate situation, that requires a great deal of subtly in it's handling. Unfortunately, subtly doesn't seem to be in the vocabulary being used.

P.s Did anyone see Michael Gove shouting 'disgrace!' at the other MP's? Best TV I've seen in a while.

He must have one of the most punchable faces in UK politics. And that's saying something. Apparently he had to be 'calmed down'. The mental image there is fantastic.

I do. Doesn't matter who uses it, it's barbaric.

So the Brits are out. There will still be airstrikes on the probably genocidal - or more accurately holocaustical - Syrian government, who probably did it, but for whom the guilt is not a slam dunk. CIA/NSA certainty being what it is... Well.

But the Russians are certainly in. For Syria. They're moving warships there. Some of their earlier statements were that it was a simple rotation, but this statement seemed to make a lot of news agencies, and other statements contain a slightly stronger element of menace. You remember the Russians - they're the ones with all those nukes that used to be aimed at us.

Still, recreational marijuana appears to be in. A winning week.

BBC are reporting that the President Hollande is still backing the willing to back the US and send French troops in.

Odd. The first war the French have shown up for in a while. Maybe they think that they have a better chance of selling the Islamists arms than the Syrians. New markets and all that.

America, of course, wouldn't take such cynical advantage. Arms merchants and all that.

Russia wants Assad to stay in order to protect its self interests. Their involvement to "aid" Syria has nothing to do with helping to resolve the overall conflict in the Middle East. It's obvious as to its only motive to even enter into the picture. Russia claims it has concerns over "Islamic militancy" taking over the region should Assad leave office, but to me, in what I've read, it only cares as to how such a situation could affect their special interests. Russia should be ashamed.

They've been quite active in Mali recently. There does seem to be shift in their attitude towards foreign policy. Hollande is more Hawkish than we thought I guess. (That or they don't want to get slagged off by Americans anymore after Iraq/Afghanistan)

It's not like the US are rushing in for the good of their own health.
