So lets have some light hearted fun with exobiology!

    Here are the questions:

Do you believe there is likely intelligent life out there in the universe? Why no contact?

Do you believe if we encountered such an intelligent life they would be hostile or indifferent to our plight?

If the president called you and asked you for a plan of action to take out a large alien mothership that seems to be important to the invaders, what would you recommend be done? **Edit** (in this scenario the aliens have shown themselves to be hostile and will not communicate, the ship is the size of a city and orbiting just a few thousand miles out from the ISS.)

If we were contacted by an alien race who wanted to wipe us out for resources how do you imagine they might do it?

Possible to fight back if our weapons can harm them? Do you think we would band together to fight and resist the invaders or turn on each other instead making it impossible to resist?

What type of technology could you envision them having? Any wild imaginations have any cool ideas for alien tech that they may have?

Just a fun topic to discuss, I look forward to your thoughts! I will post my answers below.

Yes. We have not developed enough to be able to contact them, nor have we developed enough us a civilization to be accepted by them

Do you believe if we encountered such an intelligent life they would be hostile or indifferent to our plight?

Intelligent life would probably stay away from our internal affairs, less intervention as possible.

If the president called you and asked you for a plan of action to take out a large alien mothership that seems to be important to the invaders, what would you recommend be done?

He is the president, he knows better. I recommen he think over his hostile motives.

If we were contacted by an alien race who wanted to wipe us out for resources how do you imagine they might do it?

Teleport into our minds and use our bodies to create a system of resource draining outside Earth with our own equipment.

Possible to fight back if our weapons can harm them? Do you think we would band together to fight and resist the invaders or turn on each other instead making it impossible to resist?

It is better to talk and learn than fight. I think the whole idea that aliens are evil is absurd, they seek the same balance in the universe we seek, the key here is to act intelligently in our interactions with them.

Sorry I am positing many of these questions in a scenario where they made contact and attacked first with no provocation from us- in this case, for the sake of the scenario, they are hostile.

After this if enough posts come I will posit a different scenario of peace and sharing of knowledge etc.. but until then lets stick to the whole evil Aliens want to kill us thing =oP

ah but that right there is the mentality we are yet to surpass to find aliens elsewhere than Earth...sad I am not in that epoch.

umm well ok in an american drama show mindset:

Yes we would find till the end and our children will infiltrate the alien motherships with bombs inside them, but not before having aliens trust them. But long before that we will launch our nuclear warheads at the aliens and destroy them...but...their buddies will come and wipe us almost all of us off the Earth but few of us will clone ourselves and we will retaliate oncemore for the sake of....

Obviously you do not understand what i'm saying so I'm just going to thank you for your input and leave it at that.

This is supposed to be light hearted fun guys, lets keep it that way and not over analyze something as silly as my awesome and obviously silly topic!

I certainly believe ETL exists somewhere, or has existed sometime.....Why no contact??? Time and distance are the two greatest barriers to contact I reckon, plus also any species with inter-stellar travel capabilities would be well in advance of us on Earth, and as such, they could be studying us anyway with technologies we are not familiar with.

If they have discovered and come to us, I believe they would not be at all aggresive, as I would like to believe that being far in advance of us, they would have thrown off the cloak of war and aggression and learnt that co-existence is far more beneficial and desirable. [let's hope so anyway!]

Any species having obtained inter-stellar travel capabilities would be far in advance of us...I'm sorry to say any resistance would be futile....

As I have inferred in the above questions....a civilisation advanced enough for inter-stellar travel, would also by necessity, have energy needs above what we are able to produce. I don't believe they would really want for anything.

Cloaking abilities [ala the Klingons ] space warping technologies, obtaing energy from the vacuum of space/time etc etc

Just a fun topic to discuss, I look forward to your thoughts! I will post my answers below.[/QUOTE]

The existence of other technological cultures has been discussed in many threads over the past 10 plus years.

There are good reasons to believe that many galaxies have no ET's & that more than one in a galaxy is very unlikley.

    What are these reasons?

I certainly do though believe that any suggestions that we as a species, or our planet are in anyway special or privileged as rather naive.
The sheer weight of numbers and the homegenity and Isotropic nature of the Universe, with the "stuff of life" being everywhere we look assures that we are most probably not alone.

    The Drake equation.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drake_equation

This applet shows the original Drake equation result plus some results when modification to equation components has been calculated.

the drake equation is just a way of telling us what we don't know. and we know so little that as a predictive tool it is pretty useless.

The Drake equation is what it is. It makes predictions using the components Drake detailed. The value we use for each component can vary based on what we want to use. Nobody claims it's any more than that. It's a guess based on what is known. There's probably lots of equations that tell you what you don't know.

When the aliens find us they will want to move in and we'll be in their way. If they wanted resources to keep moving they'd pick an empty planet to mine.

They will study us and develop biological weapons to deploy against us. They will not want to ruin the biosphere, just kill us. They will look at their weapons as we might insecticide.

Because there is no atmosphere in space to effect the same level of devastation of nuclear devices as they have here on Earth...

We might need to dig gigantic holes in the earth and fill them with fusion weapons. We cover the tops with as much dense material as possible. We arrange our holes like a shotgun blast. We have previously launched objects into space by accident during nuclear tests.

We detonate the devices and the kinetic energy launches the dense material into the mothership.

A series of gigantic, fusion-driven 'potato guns' which would have massive kinetic effect against a ship in space.

yes, unfortunately people place too much "faith" in it and plug-in unknowns based on little information.

Probably correct....The problem is our limited horizons and the usual arrogance of some in hitching their mentality [or lack thereof] onto the limitations in our horizons/knowledge etc and reaching a negative conclusion............Of course at this stage "we don't know" is certainly the correct mainstream answer, but one would have to be digging pretty deep to find a reputable scientist that would not have an opinion that ETL would be most likely then not.
Faith??? You can call it that if you like, I prefer probable speculative assumption.

Anybody who has been seriously engaged in scientific work of any kind realizes that over the entrance to the gates of the temple of science are written the words: 'Ye must have faith.'
    Max Planck:

And of course, if that extremely unlikely scenario of us being alone were reality, science would have far far more questions to answer then the alternative.
It would certainly give those religiously inclined folk something to go on about also.

There is. But its not like us humans. Our language and writings are very different. Time is another issue.

not entirely. Some may be kind. Some maybe are the basis of hindu "myths" of chariots at war, or gods and demons, or the hidden puppets behind us while we are in the matrix.
sound wave aimed at them may drive them off. Heck the president is big headed and wouldn't listen to a piss ant like me. I would gorilla warfare any aliens that were nearby. Hope I take out any "scout ships" before the mother ship arrives.

same way as in cowboys and aliens.

fight or die trying! Many I know would fight. Some individually some together.
Crazy weather weapons where they use the weather against us...
    I agree...
