Thank a Change.org petition circulated by 15-year-old Sarah Kavanagh of Hattiesburg, Miss., for reminding everyone that PepsiCo (PEP -0.07%) product Gatorade -- along with 10% of other drinks sold in the U.S. -- contains brominated vegetable oil (BVO). It's supposed to keep the flavors in citrus drinks from separating into orange-tangerine-grapefruit slick floating atop a bed of seltzer, but it's so named because it contains bromine, which is the same element found in the flame retardant used on upholstery and children's items like pajamas. How refreshingly noncombustible. Back in March, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Center for Science in the Public Interest found high levels of 4-methylimidazole, an animal carcinogen, in Coca-Cola (KO +0.16%) and Pepsi products, though the FDA disputes the claim. Both of those companies are fans of BVO, as PepsiCo adds it to both Gatorade and Mountain Dew, while Coca-Cola puts it in Powerade, Fresca and Fanta Orange. and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (DPS +0.45%), for its part, uses BVO in Squirt and some Sunkist brands. http://money.msn.com/now/post.aspx?post=e7f448a0-cd39-411d-9299-1e1e77d079bf
As I heard said before. There is something wrong with everything... And we are all going to die sometime.... Life is full of shit and it is what you make it..... When life gives you lemons add vodka..... And there is always more wise sayings and information. Sometimes though you have to turn over rocks....
All the more reason to stay away from those health/power drinks. I don't like them anyway so at least that's *one* thing I'm safe from. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Sounds like scaremongering. What exactly is "disgusting" about brominated vegetable oil? Is it the scary name? Why are flame retardants relevant? Water is a flame retardant. So what? Drinking sugary drinks like Gatorade is a bad idea... because they are full of sugar. If you're drinking so much of them that Bromine toxicity is an issue, then taking the bromine out is still going to leave you awfully unhealthy. Forget about campaigning against BVO. If you want to make a difference, campaign for limits to marketing and sugar content of drinks and other junk food.
Pete an Syz good answers. Dang! I burnt my finger just now. Guess washing my hands in it didn't help none. (Just joking) Gatoraid is a liquid an liquid puts out fire. Pete does have a point. And so does Syz. But that spicy food I think syz means your post is not really true.
There are so many questionable ingredients and 'products' on the food market that the only reasonable way to combat them is by means of education, IMO, and let the informed consumers vote with their wallets for that is the only action that cannot be 'white-washed' or interfered with by outside agencies. Reduced profit margin is the only sure catalyst for action in my observation. Let the buyer beware. You have the executive decision making authority so get informed and put it to use.
It gets worse: Gatorade also contains CARBON, which is found in pesticides, chemical weapons, explosives, and the ebola virus! OH MY GOD ELEMENTS ARE SCARY!!!!
