As I understand, the people of Basra have risen in revolt over their cruel masters and are being bombed by their own side! The pro Saddam militia are firing mortar rounds at their own people. What do the Arab nations think about that then?

Ah, the voice of the eternal cynic - again! Why is it a hoax? Why should the Coalition decide to invent an internal revolution in order to have to go into a city they had no intention of going into? If the pro Saddam militia are not throwing mortars at the Coalition then who are they aiming at? Cause its happening - now!

I don't believe this: I just went into Sky News website to find a link and found a picture of a dead sea king pilot who drowned when those two helicopters collided. It was accompanied by the sounds of splashing!!

    icest0rm,

It could be an attempt by the US and UK to bomb Basra and then blame the civilian casualties on a fictious conflict between the population of Basra and the Iraqi army.

From the outskirts of Basra, British troops have bombarded Iraqi mortar positions in the city in an effort to support the uprising, according to journalist Richard Gaisford, who is with British forces just outside.

He said that the British troops were using a system of radar tracking to pinpoint and then attack the mortar positions.

Coalition planes have also dropped two very large bombs on the Baath Party headquarters in the city, which is reported to have been reduced to rubble.

The main Shia Iraqi opposition group, the Iran-based Supreme Assembly for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, which claims connections in the city said a revolt was taking place.

There have been multiple exchanges of fire between Iraqi forces on outskirts of Basra and British troops throughout the day.

You're kiding right? What's the point of bombing Basra just for the hell of it... and if there are troops there why would they suddenly need an excuse to bomb them? It would just come out later that there was no internal conflict.

The Busheviks are not worried about later. They are trying frantically to tilt Iraq into capitulation now- and damn the recriminations later. Why do you think reporting has largely stopped, and the stories are getting weirder? Busheviks can't understand why Iraqis don't instantly embrace gunpoint "democratization", but they sense it may have something to do with pesky reality.

Only those in Basra know what is happening. But the US is being selective in which rumors escape.

The Saddam regime deliberately stopped water going into the city in order to hurt the Shiite population.

    The reason for this thread

I cannot believe the cynicism and lack of thought processes here!!! There are some people in here who still believe that the world is flat. How OBVIOUS does something have to be for it to be believed in here???

I suppose I am not looking at dawn images of Baghdad now but downtown LA at sunset!!!

There is definitly a food and water shortage in Basra, in all of southern Iraq for that matter, Nothing can be off loaded from ships until mines are cleared from the harbors. And sniper fire is suppressed.

If there is an uprising it is because the people are desperate for food and water, not because they want to help Americans shoot Iraqi troops.

It is apparent that it will be difficult to deliver humanitarian aid to non military combatants only.

What puzzles me is why coalition forces were not prepared for this situation. As of just yesterday coalition forces were going to surround Basra entirely. and for the most part by-pass it.

Did our commaders think that they could starve out the Iraqi troops in Basra without causing a crisis for the civialians??

They probably(hopefully) realize that it is too risky to go fight in a urban area if the populus is against you. Now that there seems to be US support it would be easier to go thru, but they will probably stay on the outskirts and take out people they deem a threat.

Perhaps they don't like their current form of governement. Regardless, I wouldn't call them dumb shits.

Lol. You just called them dumb shits and now you think the brits should go and save them? Supposedly they are helping by taking out military positions by air.

The Brits are going in to help them but as we are the only Army with street fighting experience they are rushing up the correct troops, in this case 42 Commandos. American forces for all their might cannot handle urban warfare. Lazy Shits - talking from it you are!
