Freedom Defender Pamela Geller has posted this ad on buses, starting with the Muni buses in San Francisco

Three cheers for the Judge who made this possible.

Thank you Pamela Geller, for exposing the context of the occupation of Palestine. We always knew it was a colonial enterprise, but to have it splashed across the public transport system for native Americans, Hispanics, Asians and African Americans to see and digest, was an act of courage and enterprise on your part.

You really enjoy this sort of thing, I don't see any adds in Iraq about this or in Saudi Arabia so why is it so important that this type of propaganda gets displayed on buses only in America?

    Can we be surprised?

Because that is where the money and donations come from.

But portraying Palestinians as savages is not new and it won't be the last that we see of it from the far right. Nor is it something we should be surprised at this latest spray from Geller.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has a very good and profile page on Pamela Geller. Yes, she is posted on there because of the fact that she is a bigot and a hate mongering individual who has not only supported individuals such as Slobodan Milosovic, but also denied the Serbian genocide of Muslims and also complained of the genocide of whites in South Africa (because giving Africans in South Africa rights amounts to a genocide of whites).

In Atlas Shrugs, Geller lays bare her sympathies with extremist groups across the globe. She has vigorously defended Slobodan Milosevic, the former Serbian president who died while on trial at The Hague for war crimes, and denied the existence of Serbian concentration camps in the 1990s.

She has allied herself with racist extremists in South Africa in promoting a claim that the black population is carrying out a "genocide" of whites.

The Southern Poverty Law Center profile is disturbing as it is astounding, because she often skirts around the freedom of speech to push hate speech.

You need to look at this individual and know that this latest poster cited in the OP is not unexpected. This is what and who Geller is and supports. To her, Muslims are savages. We are talking about a Jewish woman who spouts so much hatred that even Neo-Nazi groups and websites support her and view her favourably. I mean think about it for a second...

Through her website, Geller has promulgated some of the most bizarre conspiracy theories found on the extreme right, including claims that President Obama is the love child of Malcolm X, that Obama was once involved with a "crack whore," that his birth certificate is a forgery, that his late mother posed nude for pornographic photos, and that he was a Muslim in his youth who never renounced Islam. She has described Obama as beholden to his "Islamic overlords" and said that he wants jihad to be victorious in America. In April 2011, Geller accused Obama of withholding evidence in the then-upcoming trial of accused Fort Hood mass murderer Major Nidal Malik Hasan.

Geller uses her website to publish her most revolting insults of Muslims: She posted (and later removed) a video implying that Muslims practiced bestiality with goats and a cartoon depicting the Muslim prophet Mohammad with a pig's face (observant Muslims do not eat pork). Geller also has denied the genocide of Bosnian Muslims by Serbian forces in Srebrenica – calling it the "Srebrenica Genocide Myth," even though the Serbian government itself issued a state apology for the massacre. She wrote, "Westerners are admitting to their role in something that didn't happen, and digging their own graves."

Geller will ally with virtually any individual or movement that expresses stridently anti-Muslim sentiments, no matter how otherwise repugnant. As a result, she has frequently rubbed shoulders with elements of white radicalism. In 2009, Geller was invited to address the German far-right organization Pro Köln [Cologne], described as a successor group to the neo-fascist German League for People and Homeland. Pro Köln at the time was under investigation by the German authorities because of its defamation of foreigners and suspected violations of "human dignity." As of early 2011, Pro Köln was officially deemed a right-wing extremist group by the German authorities.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

Geller invited the notorious British anti-Muslim group English Defence League (EDL) to her September 2010 anti-mosque rally in New York. The previous May, a report by the British newspaper The Guardian revealed the EDL as thugs who hold anti-Muslim protests intended to provoke violence. Because of its racism and history, the EDL's leader, Tommy Robinson, was denied entry at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and sent back to England.

Yet Geller described the EDL in May 2010 as "courageous English patriots" when the group mobilized popular anger to oppose the construction of a mosque in the town of Dudley, near Birmingham, England. "There is nothing racist, fascist, or bigoted about the EDL," she wrote. In February 2010, she wrote in her blog, "I share the E.D.L.'s goals. We need to encourage rational, reasonable groups that oppose the Islamisation of the West."

In February 2011, she spoke favorably of Soviet leader Josef Stalin's forced relocation and genocide of Chechen Muslims after World War II, arguing – wrongly – that they were allied with Adolf Hitler. Historians say Chechens were fighting to preserve their own freedom and culture.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Geller's anti-Muslim stance has also drawn the admiration of white nationalist and even neo-Nazi proponents on the extreme right – a rather remarkable feat, considering she is Jewish. She has been the subject of positive postings on racist websites such as Storm--front, VDARE, American Renaissance and the neo-Confederate League of the South.

There is no such thing in the US as "skirting around the freedom of speech." Thankfully, we don't have laws preventing "hate speech" here.

Now, I know nothing about this woman aside from what's been written here, and she sounds deplorable, but no one should make attempts to silence her. That's the opposite of a solution.

I agree with Balerion on this issue. Geller is a terrible human being, and it's good to get information out there on who she is and the sorts of (often crazy) positions she is known for, but surely her point of view can be defeated without denying her the right to speak. Her poster is simplistic, but it won't harm anyone and, as is suggested above could call attention to the situation in a way that could undermine her own position. The marketplace of ideas seems likely to work reasonably well in this context.

Of course, unlike some, I think the poster should be rejected, and that military aid to Israel is nonetheless defensible, so perhaps that influences my take on it.

Oh I don't disagree with you.

I think the longer she continues, the more supporters she will eventually lose as her messages become even more hateful.

I mean this woman is so appalling that Neo-Nazi groups think she's great.. And she is Jewish. This is the extent of just how much of a disgusting individual she actually is.

So in a way, it is good that she pushes the boundaries this far. So that when peaceful messages come out in response to her, and she will attempt to silence those in the courts, then her own hypocrisy can be used against her. But it is also good because then, whatever she represents loses traction amongst the populace and she will be left with just the extremists supporting her, which we are seeing already.

Well that's exactly right. The great thing about freedom of expression is that it weeds out the idiots far more effectively than suppression. Maybe today this nutjob is popular (I don't know if she actually is or not), but, as you say, as her message gets more and more extreme, the fewer and nuttier her followers are, until she's completely irrelevant.

The thing about Neo-Nazis loving her only means that her message is in line with their own, and as a Jew she's perfect for their propaganda. "If she gets it, well, then the truth of our cause really is self-evident. " They are parasites and morons, remember.

But yeah, she's totally heinous. I often wonder how people like that come to their beliefs. I'm guessing she was raised that way.

I think Geller like so many of the celebrities on the right see an easy opportunity to make a fast buck and she is taking advantage of it. Unfortunately there is a market for this stuff in The United States, and she like Fox News, Clear Channel Communications, Rush Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Levin and legions of others play to that market 24 hours a day 7 days a week in this country. Frankly I don't think some of these people/organizations believe the stuff they are are selling, but it is an easy paycheck. The people that purchase this stuff and support this stuff are just as culpable.

Geller certainly has a number of very mad positions, although I'm not clear in what way she is "allied" to white supremacists. Definitely off the deep-end though.

Yet, this public service message is being brought to you by the same poster that described a little fellow-feeling for Abul Ala Maududi. What does one call a bandwagon constructed of irony?

They are quite supportive of her and her ideology.

Do you think she is wrong about Geller though?

About her being courageous and enterprising? I don't see where the OP says much else about Geller, although she does pointedly disagree with your descriptions of Geller as a fringe lunatic who is supported by nobody except "extremists." On the contrary, the whole thrust of the OP is that Geller is simply being honest and revealing the true, unvarnished nature of the occupation of Palestine (which, apparently, is supposed to include the Israel lobby and international Zionism more generally, by implication).

If we accept your position, that still doesn't mean that people shouldn't oppose her, or even go as far as publicly denouncing her views.

Well, CAIR is supportive of Sam's stance, too. Is Sam allied with CAIR?

    ...ok, bad example.

I think it's what Geller is wrong about. A lot of the quotes they give - and I'm no Geller follower - are pretty whacky. I suppose people have the right to be Birthers or whatever they're called now, but it's ridiculous to my mind.

Of course you're right. I only meant no one should attempt to stop her in a legal sense. I believe people should be free to express their opinions without fear of legal reprisal.

The implication being that everyone should attempt to silence her, just not via the use of state power, or any other sort of violence.
