Although this song is accredited to Lennon/McCartney, it was actually written by John Lennon before the formation of the Beatles. George Martin borrowed it from Lennon for Billy Joe Kramer and the Dakotas (another band he was producing) and they recorded it in 1963. Lennon was unhappy with their arrangement, and also a bit angry that it was released as the "B" side of the single "Bad To Me". Lennon had the Beatles re-do it more to his liking, and it was released on their second US album in 1964.

In 1966 it appeared again in the debut album (If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears) of The Mamas & The Papas. John Phillips loved "honky-tonk" piano, and he incorporated this music style into numerous Mama & Papa arrangements such as Words Of Love, Dedicated To The One I Love, Dream A Little Dream Of Me, etc. I Call Your Name is another brilliant honky-tonk arrangement by Phillips and overall, I think the best arrangement of this song. The studio pianist on all M&P recordings was the versatile Larry Knetchel.

    The Bug

    http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...woC4Aw&usg=AFQjCNGb_el2t7dKxfFrtOR09cz69aXbjw

well it's a strange old game - you learn it slow
one step forward and it's back to go
    you're standing on the throttle
    you're standing on the breaks
in the groove 'til you make a mistake

    sometimes you're the windshield
    sometimes you're the bug
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're a fool in love
    sometimes you're the louisville slugger
    sometimes you're the ball
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're going to lose it all

you gotta know happy - you gotta know glad
    because you're gonna know lonely
    and you're gonna know bad
when you're rippin' and a ridin'
    and you're coming on strong
    you start slippin' and slidin'
and it all goes wrong because

    sometimes you're the windshield
    sometimes you're the bug
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're a fool in love
sometimes you're the louisville slugger baby
    sometimes you're the ball
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're going to lose it all

one day you got the glory
    one day you got none
    one day you're a diamond
    and then you're a stone
    everything can change
in the blink of an eye
so let the good times roll
    before we say goodbye, because

    sometimes you're the windshield
    sometimes you're the bug
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're a fool in love
sometimes you're the louisville slugger baby
    sometimes you're the ball
sometimes it all comes together baby
sometimes you're going to lose it all

Just saw them again (every summer for the past decade) last month.

I'm going to close out here with four Doobie gems from various albums.

The Doobie Brothers - Dark Eyed Cajun Woman

I think back to the time
When I first saw your face
You were walkin' across the delta
To your cold and lonely place
You know I took you for a small girl
    Really not quite seventeen
Oh Lord, but I was wrong, oh so wrong
    You're like a woman I've never seen

    Dark eyed Cajun woman
    Where are you comin' from
Your soul is in the backwoods
They say you never had a home
But I'm gonna know you better
If it takes all night and day
    Dark eyed Cajun woman
You'll never get away, no, no

Now the evenin' breeze is blowin'
I hear your voice most everywhere
    Your cold black eyes
They are dancin' in the starlight
    Warmin' the cold night air
It's so beautiful you know I have to say
    Dark eyed Cajun woman
    You'll never get away

This gem closes out the Brotherhood compact disc (1991)

The Doobie Brothers - Rollin' On

Outside of town there is a river
And it calls to me like a song in the night
A whole lot of people make way to that river
Cause it keeps on rollin on
    Like everything's alright
    Listen to me...

That old river just keeps rollin on
Even when our love is just a song
And like that river we just keep on rollin along

    Listen to me...
Everybody needs something they can count on everyday
Like a clock that keeps the time for ya it never drifts away
You and me you see are different but the same
And though we may not understand each other
We got to try just the same
    Listen...

That old river just keeps rollin on
Even when our love is just a song
And like that river we just keep on rollin along

Now these thoughts don't mean nothin
If we don't live up to what we say
I for one need love and direction
To help me find my way

    Everybody sing...
That old river just keeps rollin on
Even when our love is just a song
And like that river we just keep on rollin along
    Little bit farther...
That old river just keeps rollin on
Even when our love is just a song
And like that river we just keep on rollin along
    Gonna help your brother
    C'mon people...
That old river just keeps rollin on
    Rollin on...
Even when our love is just a song
    Just a song...
And like that river we just keep on rollin along
    Everybody needs something...
