So much for Peak Oil: Oil in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming Equal to Entire World's Reserves

Thanks for trying, so I will respond.

1. So let's take this 3 million barrel for granted. (probably highly questionable, because of the other points) If the US needs is 20 million, then the 3 million is only 1/7th or 15%. Not badbut seeing how much foreign oil we use, bot enough. And again, if we take the Rand (not very objective) organization in blind faith.

2. The method sounds very energy wasting one. Lack of water is still and will be an issue.

4. I don't really trust an oil company's estimates. Probably half of it is true.

5. Depends. If they don't employ enough people, way more will be pissed by mess ed up enviroment and such...

So your argument is based on a new technology that might work or might not...

1) 15% is nothing to laugh at, how would you like to reduce your mortgage by 15%?

2) They said it will take 1/6 of the energy gained, and a co-product is natural gas which can be used to power the process (or sold to pay for natural gas imported).

RAND seems to be trustworthy, they've been working for the government since the 50's.

And if this technology doesn't work, someone will make something else. If there is oil in the ground people will get it. Especially if it's billions of dollars worth. This find can only be good for America, at some point in the future we will have access to billions of barrels of oil!

Everything is relative. If the population grows by 2% per year, that 15% saving will be offset in 7 years.

Sure I trust the government when we find the Iraqi WMDs. They didn't acknowledge peak oil until recently, although it was an obvious fact and they are in a position to actually do something about it.

Sounds like a true Republican, (who lives in fantasyland).

That would be great! But if someone said "well, your old job is going away - but we'll replace it with one that pays you 15% of your old one!" that wouldn't be so good.

We will always need oil for high value applications, like feedstock for plastics and chemicals. But we will eventually have to learn how to live without burning it as quickly as possible - because someday soon the supplies will begin to decline.

"Have access to" does not equal "can be economically recovered." If it takes $1000 to recover a barrel of oil - or more importantly, if it takes two barrels of oil worth of energy to recover one barrel of oil - then it will no longer be economical to recover, and recovery will stop.
