Hi 1nf1del, welcome to the forum. The following article describes what I watched on a science channel presentation. The EMP cannon does indeed stop a moving car, providing it does have a micro processor. But it was said to only have an effective range of maybe 200 m, I would hope a military application would have a bit more range and power.

Without going into details, I have seen discussions of how to build an EMP cannon from a microwave synchroton. It's actually surprisingly easy.

Right, but I thought we were talking about terrorists with a big enough EMP to cause havoc, the fact of the matter is, to have a weapon useful enough to cause any kind of significant damage would be huge and would have to be used from above to affect a large enough area.

Well yes there are different ways to generate EMP and the nuclear way is very destructive. Any terrorist that was able to do that would be a real threat. I wouldn't want to be in the country that helped and supported that action.

But a military EMP beam weapon is also a much cheaper option, and probably portable, which means it could be set up very remote from where they acquired it and knock a few planes out of the air before being tracked down. It might also be able to knock out key portions of our infrastructure such as major points on our electrical grid or the stock exchange.

You have a good point there, but how damaging would it really be to the infrastructure and our way of life?

Something seems different about the forum this morning? Anyway the real damage from a terrorist attack, is to promote fear and a big response to that fear. Most of us in the U.S. understand what that type of fear does to change a society. We certainly have less freedom after 9/11 than we did before it it happened. What kind of fear do you think a small portable EMP device would cause after people started dying or going without power for extended periods of time or even several days of no stock trading?

Ya, it was down for a couple of hours for maintenance, it came back up about a half hour ago, it's all different.
