Laptops

I had the same with an Acer, but was able to save it with a new mobo. Overall I wasn't crazy about Acer's reliability, although I liked them as laptops. Funny thing is since we started to use laptops, we have 5 of them in the house, and they all still working. Some of them are obsolate, and I put Linux on them, but if needed, they all can access and cruise the web. Some have physical damage, dead batteries, broken of keys or vertical lines on the display, but they still all run.

I am currently shopping for a new one for the kid, because the screen couldn't stand the abuse anymore, it is almost ripped off, but it still working.

I am planning to hook it up to a screen and use it as a desktop, once he gets the new one.

So I will just take him to the shop, tell him the budget and let him choose. I have just realized that instead of fingerprint recognition, the new rad is face recognition as a security feature. I guess it is cheaper for the manufacturer, since it is only a software not an extra hardware component.

Well, we just came back from the stores. First Walmart, where we chose a Sony on display, and of course they were out of it. Then to HHGregg, where we didn't choose anything, although they had a few decent and cheap things.

Last we ended up in Best Buy where the selection was the biggest. Apparently the fingerprint security is really out of date, but we managed to find a Lenovo with it, that was actually on Clearence. So we got that for $360. The laptops in the same range are so similar that it really boils down to personal preference, color, smell, whatever. That face recognition thing is a software and apparently, kind of expensive...

I only expect this to last 1 year, so if it survives that, I am happy and for this little money, we can buy one every year... As long as the kid is happy with it, I just don't want it to die on a coach, overheating...

 

R1D2, you ever consider a Tablet? Much easier to transport, and better battery life than even a Netbook... though the new Ultrabooks (ultralight laptops) are good units, bit pricy though.

The raddest part of all is that it's totally insecure! Anybody with a photograph of an authorized user can use that to get access. Face recognition for "security" is a gimmick, and nobody who cares about security uses it. Every device I've seen that supports it comes with a warning that it is totally insecure and not to be relied upon.

 

Then I guess it is a good thing we got the finger print thingy. By the way the laptop still has a face recognition software on it, but I haven't looked into it yet...

 

Unfortunately if someone wants to get into your computers internal system they can no matter what you do to prevent it.

I recently upgraded to my new beast (haysoos the asus), but before that I had a Dell Vostro. I recommend it to anyone who wants a 'cart it around, bang it up, load it up, and overwork it" laptop for cheap. I think I paid a little under 400 for it, and It gave me 3 years of exceptional usage, and has since been passed along and is still used. even works decent for gaming on low settings. Pretty good for a machine carted around every day and dropped once a week

Lenovo Thinkpads - a tad pricey and a bit ugly, but they are hands-down the best laptop you can buy for quality and durability. I've been in the IT industry for a long time and have owned 3 so far, my latest is the T420. I would suggest waiting until Christmas or any time they have a sale to buy one, as they usually have really good discounts. It was fully loaded, and I think I got somewhere around $800-1000 off mine and got a free upgrade to their best 3-year warranty when I bought it last year.

First there is really no such a thing as best laptop, it all depends on what one needs are. Second, for that money the OP could buy 3 cheap laptops, different kinds (one for the beach, one bigger for home,etc.) and he doesn't have to worry about warranty...

Third, if it is so durable, why do you need the warranty anyway???

If my budget were $1000, I would buy ALL these 3:

1. A small, unreflecting notebook for outside use and travel. Also for reading lying down... $250
2. The biggest screen (17") for home use instead of a desktop. Gaming should be fine on it. $450
3. The average, cheapest laptop with long battery time for using it at home carrying around the house, and also for traveling. $300

I have just checked at Walmart, they have 17" HP machine for $400, most notebooks are under $300, and there are a few 15" normal sized laptops for $300. Again, different laptops for different needs...

Just as a caveat to my previous post ... Dell makes some really good laptops too, but their quality seems to vary every year and on the model your interested in, so you really need to read the reviews before buying.
