The answer is the continent is ruled by treaty. Various nations have made claims on the continent, some of them are overlaping claims. The United States does not recognize the claim on any nation to the continent. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/ay.html
people are "said" to have their eyes on it strategically... russia, some n. european countries, etc. i believe. maybe canada. not sure. doesn't mean they'll get it, though, as in fact it is protected.
Russia is now claiming the north pole too, sinking a ship at the pole to anchor their claim....kind of stupid if you ask me.
This treaty is signed by 12 nations which means those nations can't claim it and if someone else claims it those countries won't recognize them as a nation. However there is no such power in any country or organization to make these rulings over land that has been claimed or has not been claimed. SO this treaty is unfounded. Thus the reason only 12 nations signed it.
This is an official notice to you that 90 degrees west to 150 degrees west is now claimed territory by the Now claimed Antarctican Government whose jurisdiction and property is listed above.
A plan...but hear it out. Many of you know that many countries hold treaties preventing people from claiming territory in Antarctica. The U.S. would be more likely to say no to allowing people to found a nation in Antarctica but who's to say we don't get Russia involved... The only true country that can challenge the United States on even footing. Let's say that this a nation funded secretly by some of the world's greatest nations. All this new nation would have to do is claim independence and not just build armies but build a place that will draw the right kind of attention. A place where the greatest scientific and engineering minds can be free to do as they please without fear of censoring or held back by petty morality. Many countries already use it for research and testing. The Primary benefactors would either get small territories in the country or be allowed to have ambassadors who protect the interest of their countries. Britain, Switzerland, France, Germany, and Russia should be the main European Benefactors. Israel, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea should act as our main Asian Benefactors. Australia would be allowed as well. We're talking about conquering the world's harshest continent, so we need to be just as harsh if we are going to create a nation in this land.
If you want to colonize antartica, i would use technology as your strongest recsource. its the only way you would survive. Gathering a group of people (not too big 30 at most) and going down there you could set up a camp, build a small wind mill or solar panels. now you have electricity. from there you need to dig. Its the same concept of a snow fort. also, the best thing to do is remain hidden. that means put yourself completly underground. even your windmills can be in caverns with openings. Then you need food, Plant life is possible using greenhouses(underground) and ice retains heat fairly well. then you could even get other animals there. From there, you bring others there, and other people will come. Now you will be known, and most likly, if you diclare your independence, and your where your not aloud, and you have a sizable population, war might break out. So if the case happens, it would best to have smaller organizations in other countries for support. It would be hard, but you can do it..........atleast i hope so, cause im going to do it. note: smartest thing to do would be to get nation funding. that way you can be backed up in a pinch.

I'd say the first part of continent to be colonised would be the Antarctic Peninsula, because it goes furthest north and is likely to lose its ice fairly early on. Once you have harbours and bays that are free of ice most of the year, you have the potential for settlement--look at Siberia, same situation. Besides, you're looking at six million square miles of land, with the possibility of more in future. Land is pushed down by the weight of ice--by an average of 1/3 the thickness of the ice. Land rises out of the sea as the weight of the ice is removed by global warming, so Antarctica could rise dramatically. So 12,000 feet of ice pushes the land down ca 4000 feet. Rising land therefore makes Antarctica much larger over the coming centuries.

I accept your claim on said land. You are the true owner. Will you be drilling for oil? I hold the mineral rights.
I want to start drilling straight away. Could you make sure there are no penguins around. There might be some spillage. Plus, there will be heavy machinery, and I wouldn't like to see them squashed.
