The Ruger Mark 3 fires a .22 long cartridge which is generally used in rifles. The .22 long goes a lot further than a standard slug due to there being more propellent powder in the cartridge, thus the "long" designation, and a copper jacket on the slug keeps it cutting through the air rather than spreading out like a hollow - point lead slug and falling to the ground quickly. The Mark 3 was designed specifically for long range marksmanship in a pistol. You can get the Mark 3 with a long barrel which increases its accuracy. It is difficult to disassemble, clean and reassemble, however, and takes a bit of getting used to. If you desire to become extremely proficient at pistol marksmanship though, it is an excellent choice of pistol and can be carried on your person. That way, the target pistol that you become accustomed to at the range is the same pistol that you carry in real life usage, so you are going to be much more comfortable using it in an emergency, you will shoot it with greater accuracy and will make fewer mistakes with it than if you use one pistol at the range and another for a carry piece.

Most actual real - world self defense usage of a pistol occurs between 10 and 30 feet. If an assailant is closer than 10 feet away they can grab the pistol and try to take it away from you. If they are more than 30 feet away they will be very hard to hit as most folks can't hit the broad side of a barn with a shotgun from that distance. They would also be very much less a threat from 30 feet so you can more easily disengage.

I have 2 pistols that I carry when the necessity arises - a .22 rim-fire Berretta semi automatic and a .357 Smith and Wesson J - Frame 5 shot revolver. I have a license/carry permit for them (that means I am legally allowed to carry these on my person). I sometimes transport extremely expensive articles that do not belong to me and are uninsured during transport. I sometimes need to travel through some very nasty areas. The pistols provide another layer of personal protection when I am so engaged. I am an NRA trained marksman with a .22 rifle (have one of those too) and NRA "qualify" with the pistols as well. (That means I can hit the target very accurately between 8 and 30 feet.) In order to fire the Beretta I must grab the top slide with one hand and pull it back to chamber a round while I hold the grip with my other hand, so it cannot go off accidentally - it must be "cocked" in order to shoot. The S&W revolver has a stiff trigger pull as it moves the cylinder that holds the rounds to bring up a fresh round as you squeeze the trigger. That makes it very hard to fire accidentally as well.

The .22 Beretta is very effective at very close range, but it fires small slugs so it lacks what is referred to as "stopping power". If an assailant is within about 8 feet, it is lethal. If an assailant is more than about 20 feet away the bullets can be stopped by a heavy jacket. It is very easily concealed, however, so I can have it in my front pants pocket and it is completely concealed. For most of my carry purpose it fills my needs.

The .357 can fire a standard .38 round and those are what I use at the range for practice. When I need to carry it for business it can be loaded with .357 Magnum rounds. Like the .22 long cartridges, the Magnum cartridges are long by comparison to the standard .38 cartridges so they contain more propellant and can be effective at greater distances. They are also then more accurate up close, and the hollow point causes the slug to expand as it travels so in an up - close confrontation the .357 Magnum slug can be devastating to an opponent.

Once again though, what you get depends entirely on what your need is. What works for me may not fit your needs at all, so you must figure out what it is that you desire then pursue that.

dude, i gotta have a personal full length session with you, you're a mine of information, and you have the hands on experience.

however, since there's more than 2 months left to my graduation, and the subject is more complex than i thought ( i was also considering one of those with a scope, mini sniper rifle

I will likely be around for quite some time unless someone on staff takes a serious disliking for me. While I have some experience with firearms, they are not my center. I have a very diverse set of interests including other weapons, and don't have the time to get heavily involved with special interest groups right now.

Having too much fun playing in the lab and shop while pursuing a variety of "leisure" activities, like running my daily 7 miles with my American Field Yellow Labrador.

Always glad to help though, just give me shout and I will do my best to assist.

buying a weapon like a gun or even a simple bow will require paper works. You should be licensed to carry something like that...

Just get a the new Ipad or something fancy like a new car...
