the best reason to take one is if you really want to join Mensa.
but who would want to do that anyway?

i've taken them as part of addmisions to get in a school/program and once because my parents took me to this learning center because i wasn't doing well in school.

online tests are unreliable. you need to be tested by a professional for your score to be anywhere near right.

i was curious to know spuriousmonkey's but i see western bias has struck again.

i haven't taken a real iq test since i was very little but apparently i did not score quite as well as my brother who hovers about 200. they never told me my score, i suppose since it would have discouraged me. an online test i took was in the 140's.

BEFORE EVERYONE TAKES THOSE INTERNET IQs

After taking my own test i spent some time talking to the lady whose job is to give those. She told me that those numbers are useless. The only measurement one should look at to compare is the PERCENTILES, not percentages. she told me that every test was different and that one should look at the bell curve to find how truely smart they are. (percentiles are your scores compared to everyone else who has taken it.

My scores. She gave me a complete breakdown. Although i can only remember a few for you.
    MEMORY(visual and verbal) 127 (Worst subject)(75%tile)
    Visual math (best) 137 (Percentile 99.9 +/-)

Now this lady told me that these scores were averaged against all age categories. i believe someone stated earlier that there were fixed scores for 'above average' and 'genus'. like i said earlier it was this lady who told me that iq test were all different. Someone see if they can find one site for us all that also gives percentiles. Otherwise it seems farfetched to me that the .1 percentiles that may or may not have beaten me are all gathered here on one thread.

I think thats what a proper I.Q test should do. Ones like the one I used to get my score only measure peoples abilities and understanding of words, mostly. Awareness of the '3d' world i.e. mentally being able to rotate figures and shapes should be a large proportion of what is used (imo). That test had dimes and dollars which I cant do because I'm english. Even if I did know it wouldn't be anything to do with intelligence. It's 'world knowledge' i suppose. Thats the same as the ounces and pounds one. Thats something you have to be taught, which isn't itelligence.

Perfect score on the Mensa work-out, 140 on one of the
    www.highiqsociety.com tests, 157 on IQTest.com and 151
    on the European IQ test.

I should give some details: the european IQ test is truly the only
test that was converted from "paper and pen" form to electronic
medium: it's supposedly pretty accurate. If you see it online, give
it a try. It's mostly mathematical, spatial and logical. No verbal IQ
    testing here!

All the internet IQ tests that I have taken have placed my IQ at about 140, even the first that I took when I was 12. The one that Dizo linked gave me 142

    163, MENSA member here.

But intelligence is no match for wisdom and life experience, both of which I still need being only 20 years old.

age is not a requirement for wisdom...intelligence is often a hindrance.

oops sorry....i don't think 120 represents your actual iq. a test that is not in your first language is unfair and not accurate.

that's ok..iq is unimportant anyway...happiness is more important and intelligence might be a a hindrance for that too.

It is a misconception that age brings wisdom. Some of us never do grow up mentally to match our physical age. Others gain wisdom all out of proportion to their age.

It is a shame there is no handbook to instruct one through life. I guess you could call it a condition of life. Such is its nature.

Do the best you can. You may only account for yourself in this. I wish you interesting times on your journey through life. (It is not meant in the sense of the Chinese version of this statement.)

For those that have had troubles to no end through life, it certainly brings experience. What we do with that experience is the question...

i hate to say it of course, but well said Wet1.

did everybody notice that most people claim to have an exceptional high IQ in the poll...hmmm....there is a skeptic alarm ringing in my brain...and it is pretty loud...

i kind of associate wisdom with death. i am almost jealous of something that is dying or has died because they know more than i do...they know death. that isn't meant to sound as morbid as it does.

i think that part of wisdom is probably knowing your limitations and accepting them. You can actually use this knowledge to your advantage.

    but maybe i'm wrong...

    scored 151 on the iqtest.com....

i completely reverse my opinion now and say that this test is the best thing since sliced butter.

and moreover...i am going to add 100 points for not being a native speaker...so...251....not bad....

also from the email you get:

'Beyond being measurable Genius: Over 200'

how could they measure that you are beyond measurable genius?
