You got that right! If someone wants to endure pain I won't try and talk them out of it. But I'll be damned if I'll put up with them telling me I need to put up with that pain. Nobody knows my suffering better than I do, and that goes for doctors too. Any doctor willing to let me suffer won't be my doctor very long.

Actually, my spouse switched from the doc who kept writing the pain scripts and saw another who said No more and my spouse tried an alternative that worked for years. Probably saved him physically. And we are both grateful for that doctor. His pains were very real at the beginning too but then a neverending cycle developed too.

Then an offshoot of the old pain came back and so now surgery will be the option.

But some pain meds are surely needed, no doubt about that. My spouse is lucky with a possible surgical cure. Without it, who knows?

And I couldn't get pain meds from my doc for my herniated neck because he thought I was lying and they were for my spouse!

So I had to see neurologist and get a confirmed diagnosis and then I took my meds like a starving dog. And zoned out in relative peace for hours.

I have a question nobody ever seems to want to talk about. Addiction. I can see at certain points in ones life where it could impact productivity and the ability to raise a family. But if your an older retired person who's kids have all moved out and have lives of their own and you are a victim of chronic pain that doctors have been unable to do anything about. What's wrong with controlled doctor supervised addiction to control pain?

I can only speak from our experience and for us. I am not arguing against you just sharing our very personal experience.

    --We had kids at home
    --My spouse drove
--The meds seem to just stop working when taking so much and had to get stronger meds some even deadly- some pain meds my spouse was on were such strong ones the doc never even told us they were for cancer patients and could kill
--They can ruin your liver and kidneys and then you have even more pain/problems
    --It's expensive
    --Coordination issues- falls
--Even some pharmacists will refuse to fill pain prescriptions if you are taking too many
    --My spouse wasn't living
--Drinking was a bad idea with some of the meds
--We wanted to solve the cause
--We eventually found the less my spouse used the less my spouse needed
--Ever take a visibly drugged spouse to a family picnic? nuff said, and I am not being funny, it was very very sad
--that's a bit of it anyway

There's nothing worse than a bad doctor.

Yup, we had 3 who happily wrote pain meds. And if you talk to a pharmacist it's not uncommon.

That was who got my S on the right path to eventually beat this thing- a concerned pharmacist.
