I make mine in the dishwasher. The hot water allows for the iron in the knives forks and spoons to orient with the magnetic field (either of earth, or the magnets of the motor); as they cool, they 'lock' in alignment with the overlying magnetic field, becoming magnetic themselves. Try it sometime.

How did you (or otherwise) manage to magnetise the earth or the magnets in the motor??

You can hit an iron rod hard enough and the polarities will align and you will have made a magnet. Magnet companies are more involved, and I am unsure of their process.

You may find this video answers your question.

I think you still have to have an existing magnetic field to do that.

No same problem as with the other answers, you need to use a magnetic field to create the magnets, thus you have a chicken and egg situation.

you asked how are magnets made.

what do you mean about chicken and egg?

in the video they are using electricity to magnetize the material

Yea, the electricity is made by the use of magnets so you are back to square one old bean!!!

So yea I still consider the question unanswered.

The Earth's core is moving current, which generates a magnetic field.

Are you asking how the earth's core formed?

    Not sure what you mean.
What is the question if not "how are magnets made"?
I'm not sure what you are asking.
Maybe you could state your question in full.

I am asking how it formed a magnet yes.

    happy?

Or how about, how would you make a magnet of no magnets existed?

It is easy to make a magnetic field with just copper wire and a current source.

There are a great many ways to make electricity without magnets.

Magnetic fields can be created with ELECTRICITY, captain.

Take a piece of iron. Heat it up and rub it on lodestone.

    There. You've made a magnet.

Don't do this at home. Take a piece of iron. wind wrap it with insulated wire. Plug the ends into an electrical socket and flick the switch. The fuse will blow but you will have a magnet. I've seen it done as kids. It could be dangerous.

    @ Esbo,
If you strike an iron rod hard enough the polarities will temporarily align and create a magnet. NO existing magnetic field is necessary. Your idea was incorrect.

(this is the simplest way to make a magnet if no magnet existed)
Magnets do occur naturally, and are called lodestones/magnetite. This is what early compasses were made from.

Electricity does not need to be made from magnets. Look at a Tesla Coil. Friction can cause static electricity is one example. Your idea electricity comes only from magnets is also incorrect.

(wire wrapped around a nail and charged can make the nail an electromagnet)

This is a very well known topic, and you have received a great many good answers here. I even enjoyed the video Aqueous linked in post 5.
