Let's say we actually could get around all of the problems and build the bridge. You would end up with a path to a grey, dusty rock that can provide a fantastic view. From there, you could start a tourist thing, maybe a theme park based off zero-grav activities, or anything really. At that point, the sky would no longer be the limit. Once that first stopping point is reached, eventually someone will get bored and want to move on to Venus.

My advice, stick to the Bifröst. It's more aesthetically pleasing, and you have the choice between finding Valhalla or a pot of gold.

Not related to a bridge, however I went through Valhalla, South Carolina a couple of months back, a small hamlet that stretched down a narrow valley. It was quite surreal. I just wish there was a shop selling "I've been to Valhalla and back" on a T-shirt. Incidentally no Bitfrost bridges, but some awesome bends in the road that a couple of road racers were drifting.

I was making a play on the idea that it's a rainbow bridge. Sometimes I fail at jokes...

You could have mentioned the trolls hiding under it... At least that would have kept the nationalities straight.

    A bridge to the moon......

Perhaps we can utilize the properties of paramagnetisn and diamagnetism in the selection of our building materials, or alternatively.....

.....If we can understand precisely what causes gravity, we could design a tall shaft within which we could 'turn gravity off', and float people beyond the pull of the earth, with a small micro-thruster to give them a boost in the direction of a landing base on the moon, similarly equipped for the return journey.

Hmmmm.....seems my horses have debated the matter and they don't want to go to the moon......lousy grazing etc., so I guess I'm staying here.

    Huh?

Have you ever heard of suspension bridge being tested for 356400 km to 406700 km length?:jawdrop:

While I agree that that length (given present materials) is, let's say, slightly unfeasible it doesn't alter the fact that a suspension bridge has "nothing in the middle holding it up". Which was my point.

Run a space elevator up high enough from our equator. Materials may be a problem.

Also run a space elevator up from the moon.

Then connect the two. perhaps the lines could be kept free from entanglements with booster rockets attached at intervals.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_elevator

Just the two elevators would probably be as efficient though.

You are valid with that point. While my thoughts were over overall feasibility of bridge(in the process ignoring certain kind of bridges) concept that was about having bridge kind of stuff up to Moon surface.

Anyway it looked to me cartoon sort of conceptualization therefore ignored a fact... which(bridge) was thoroughly improbable in this case for varied set of reasons already discussed here.
