Should Jews and Muslims wipe pigs off the face of the earth?

I was reading some random stuff on the internet about the use of insulin from porcine pancreas in the treatment of diabetes. Since it is cheaper than insulin derived from human sources and both are technically haram [does it matter if you eat it or inject it?] I was wondering if the only way to save our souls would be to wipe pigs off the face of the earth forcing the investigation of other halal sources of insulin.

Knowing sam for many years, I don't think this is really about pigs.

 

Their pancreas can still be harvested, so that suggestion won't work.


I assume the other intelligent suggestions are making their way to the patent offices.

And if you took pig genes and modified e coli to make insulin in a petri dish(which I believe has been done) would that still be haram?

Porcine/Human insulin is not used only for IDDM [Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus or Type I]; 40% of NIDDM [Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus or Type II] patients also require insulin for management of their disorder
