    .

Its difficult because 'Maslow's hierarchy of Needs' shows that until we are all on the same level there will be differing underlying needs that will drive some to desperation to secure what others have built their foundations upon.

Its a drive for scarce resources and its necessary to ensure the 'contestants' are actually the 'most fit' in order to ensure the continuance of species.

Let's take the example of sciforums. I think most of us want peace, but you would want to make sciforums into a dictatorship in order to reform it into a communist collective. I would then have to fight you to retain what I perceive as a fundamental right to freedom and democratic rule (assuming that's what we started as). So your version of peace isn't my version of peace.

Franklin Roosevelt told the people how he felt
We damned near believed what he said
He said, 'I hate war, so does Elanor,
But we won't be safe till everybody's dead'

It's an interesting dilemma. I don't think it's beyond us as humans to be tolerant, to seek peace and to help us all achieve an acceptable life. But it will be a long time in the making as far too many are selfish. If I had any idea how or where I got my views I'd know where to start, but all I can do is attempt to encourage others to see why this could be a better world.

Several billion primates sharing a wet rock hurtling around a giant ball of fire in an endless void - armed with industrial weaponry and nuclear technology - and world peace seems "so easy" to you?

Frankly, it's something of a miracle that we don't inhabit some kind of Mad Max nightmare world, if you ask me.

All the things worthwhile in the World are hard to achieve.

    Because war is inevitable.

    1. People are naturally violent.
    2. We keep building more and more ways to kill efficiently.
    3. There are bad guys out there who want nothing but destruction.

More than that, peace can't happen because we all have different views. I doubt that the World would get along for very long.

I think that accusations of selfishness are often misplaced.

Is a person who lives in London and eats her lunch, while millions in Africa are starving - is that Londoner "selfish"?

Is it "selfish" to be yourself?

People tend to run to the selfish, it's the tragedy of the commons, my friends. Hurry and finish bagging that for me, wouldja?

Only the rich live in peace because they are the ones with everyone else's money today. They can survive without any worries for they have enough money to keep them safely hidden away in their gated mansions surrounded by security guards and dogs so that they can never be hurt or feel the pains of the common citizens. Very sorry world in which we are making ourselves and I for one don't care much for it the way it is heading.

A gun can only kill you once.(well..depending on where you aim)

a mouth can do more harm than a fist or a gun, because it can be utilized over and over..maybe that's why guns were invented..to stop the mouth.

If the lunch costs a mere £500 of her 7 figure salary, yes. If she's just trying to survive then no. I don't think it's misplaced, I just think a lot of people aren't in the habit of considering others.

The starving people in Africa are that way because of a multitude of environmental, governmental, tribal and high birth and death rates. If the government there would be more prudent in educating, treating the sick and helping their citizens instead of pilfering away the money that's donated to them, then things could start to change. Until those in power accept the responsibility to give the support needed instead of stealing that support for themselves , things in Africa won't change. That's no ones fault but the people in charge of their citizens. So no other person on this planet should be ostracized for not being sympathetic to the problems but instead demand to rid the greedy and corrupt from the system there.

Someone respond to my idea. Make peace the law. First, define peace. This includes no government, just people living in a community for the betterment of mankind.. just like we do today. If someone breaks the peace.. first they receive a warning, second time they are hung.

What is peace? There would need to be some group to enforce this, obviously. How do they enforce? WIth weapons.. How do we trust these people not to kill the peace?

If you have no government, then who makes the laws? Stone Age tribes of a few dozen members of an extended family were able to operate without governments because they had all known each other since birth and (presumably) respected their elders. In a larger community you have to have a formally defined chain of command because everybody doesn't know everybody else.
But how do they know that they've broken the peace if the community has no organization? Over here in this village you'll have people who believe it's a breach of the peace to be drinking and dancing and carousing at 3am, and over here on the other side you'll have people who think it's a breach of the peace to get up and start cooking and driving at 7am. Who's right?
By whom? A committee of vigilantes?
By whom? Without a formal government, once the population gets up into seven figures, and maybe even five, people will passionately disagree on what's right and wrong, and there will be no way to decide who's right. They'll end up shooting each other.
Sounds like we're both reaching the same conclusion. Once you have a civilization that requires total strangers to live in harmony and cooperation with one another, you need a formal structure that defines the rules. The name we give that structure is "government."

Oh, I think most people are considering others - so much so that numerous psychologists and self-help authors can make a most comfortable living off of that.

Namely, most people are considering others, and they do so in ways that are not particularly healthy or constructive.
