I wonder if this is the right place for advice to be given to Dinosaur. Actually, I suspect he knows that also.

Dinosaur is a man in his 80's, and want to keep strong and fit with exercise. That is great. However, safe and beneficial exercise when you are over 80 may not be totally straightforward.

I wonder if we should refrain from such advice, and suggest that Dinosaur consult with someone who has the requisite expertise.

Doing five 40 to 50 metre all out sprints is one of the best way to do exercise on days when you do not have enough time . It totally shakes your body .

It's a great exercise because you use so many muscles all at once. It's also low-impact--well actually zero-impact to be precise--so it minimizes the stress on your tissues.

One advantage of swimming is that unless you have a serious injury you can probably keep doing it all your life. Almost all people are slightly buoyant so once you learn how to lie on your back and position your body so your face is always out of the water, just about anybody can swim, as slowly as necessary.

I am looking forward to open swim at the local high school with my son this Friday. It is one of the high points of my summers, we started when he was in beginner swimming at age 4 or 5, still go even though he is now 19.

I can do a very good walrus bellow and seal barks.

My philosophy for physical fitness (back in the day) was you needed to optimize six parameters, at the same time, for total fitness. These parameters are speed, strength, stamina, coordination, flexibility and muscle tone. Most sports will allow some of these parameters, but not all. You often need to do more than one sport or training activity to complete the list.

A few single sports that could do it all were martial arts (men) and dance (for women). But if you don't like these, a combination of weights, stretching and running could come close. Yoy might also add a sport for additional coordination.

Why can't women do martial arts? Or men dance?

They can and do . Sukura is a guy in Missoula here who owns a Do Jo that teaches Kempo . His wife . Don't go there . She will dump a 6ft plus guy on his butt in a new york minute . A big new cowboy tough guy called her out on it . Ha Ha Ha Ha . When I fought at the International karate championship in Oakland California in 1973 I stuck around and watched the girl team from Korea fight . Don't go there if you want to live . Yeah they can and they do

I have been knocked out twice while sparring. One was a big marine Vietnam vet and the other was a very normal - looking lady.

When I was a PKA fight judge, watching 2 ladies in the ring beating the crap out of each other was most enlightening. After judging a few dozen such fights, I no longer thought of women as 'delicate', am quite clear that they can be every much as dangerous as a man.

"Its not the size of the tool, but the skill of the person."

Also, men can indeed dance - some quite well.

I could kick you in the head without warming up.
    If I were in England.
Not that I would. But I could. I'm guessing you at about 6' 1"
Much easier to go for the kneecaps though.

I guess Wellwisher thinks females shouldn't be able to kick butt.

    Hi dinosaur;

I weight lift and run and I think it's so awesome you're into fitness like this!

I think that our bodies never lie to us. If you are over doing things, your body will nudge you. Lol

Swimming is great too as has been suggested. Easiest on the joints.

Using db's for your workouts is great too. If you feel the weight is getting too easy...then increase slightly and do less reps. Again...just listen to your body and it won't lie to you. Be well.

It's always good to consult one's physician before taking on any new exercise programs, too.

Congratulations to everyone for the great feat of thread necromancy. It's been dead for two years.

Dinosaur is now in his mid-80s.

I enjoy running and cycling but weight lifting is an awesome way to lean out and build lean muscle.
There are lots of great beginner weight lifting programs out there so one is not overwhelmed.
I've been weight lifting for a little over two ears and it's exciting to get strongggg!

    Good luck whatever u decide.

As an aside, weight loss is a calorie in calorie out process so diet is key. Can't out train a bad diet as they say.
