You may be talking about a local phenomena. Have you been able to observe that in other places? Maybe there was some sort of mark for a generation transition somewhere in the mid 1990s. They sure look stupid to me.

Young people are susceptible to suggestion and highly impressionable.
When I was a teen it was trendy to be goth, so all the kids went goth. My old sister thought my friends were stupid.
When my little brother was a kid, it was cool to be grungy, so all the kids went grungy. I thought they were stupid.
Now that my little sister is a teen, it's cool to be gay, so all her friends are gay. Both me and my brother think they are stupid.
The new generations will come and will continue to eat up whatever kind of crap current pop culture and hollywood can throw at them, and we will continue to think that they are stupid.

From the sound of it, the problem isn't the homosexuality. Greg Louganis was gay and Dennis Rodman a cross dresser....both were top notch athletes. The problem is the general lack of athleticism within the student body of your school. Maybe it's all the computer games and other sedentary activities being cool which the the real culprit (just a wild guess).
