Does anyone know if this is taught in medical school? ...Operating room docs, for example, have long reported that redheads appear to need more anesthetic than others. The new study suggests that that observation is an accurate one — mostly. Those with the MC1R mutation are more sensitive to opiate pain killers — which means they'd actually need less — but less sensitive to other types, most notably lidocaine injections. One study which used heat-related pain as its litmus of overall sensitivity showed that redheads indeed felt things more acutely and unpleasantly, probably because the MC1R mutation releases a hormone that stimulates a brain receptor associated with pain regulation.... link
Ye my buddy Ramon a red headed guy, I mean real red headed, needs more anestesia when he cut himself or whatever has a tooth pain etc.
I've just finished 1st year med. My last 2 weeks was an elective placement in anaesthetics. We haven't specifically been taught that readheads need more anaesthesia, but we are taught that individuals respond to drugs in different ways. There are standard doses and upper limits, but a lot of medication is about watching the patient's response, and adjusting the dose as needed. We did have a few lectures about pain pathways, types of opioid receptors, and the various weird and wonderful ways that drugs, hormones, nerves, brains, interact to stimulate or relieve the feeling of pain, but I confess that I didn't retain the fine detail.
I dated a red head once many moons ago and I will have to say that I had to buy her more liqueur to get her feeling fine than either a blond or brunette! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
This is funny . I was in Bannak Montana the old ghost town and also the old capitol of m Montana I believe . Anyway we were going through the buildings and we came on a single family resident that had been lived in as late as 1939 , So where in there . Well the walls are covered in layers of newspaper from about 1919 up to 1939 in chronological order of years . Pieces are ripped off or layers are just falling off . Anyway there was an article about red headed women . You all would be rolling . I know I was and could remember the details of the article . The jest was "Red Heads are Evil" That might even be the tittle or " The evils of Red Heads sounds more like it.
Don't know but I certainly have more fun with redheads. They are firecrackersPlease Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

I used to share a house with a redhead when I was a student. She could have done with anaesthetising a little all the time I think, she was a bit uptight.
