But only because it seems achievable in this case. Otherwise, it might be better to call the police.

No argument from me. I dearly wish it was legal to carry a gun over here. I'd feel so much safer knowing if push came to shove I could just ventilate someone's legs.

    NO SHIT!

I've gotten mistaken for a male on occasion, is it ok to kick my head in, too?

Actually, (I can't speak for ALL men) but, I don't think we would have nearly as big a problem with a woman using a mens restroom...

Hell they use the mensrooms at sporting events all the time..

Never heard of a woman being attacked for it.

Concerts as well. I see it all the time, sometimes approaching 50%. I agree that it wouldn't work out nearly so well the other way around. Perhaps an example of "reverse discrimination"?

Personally I think the whole issue is overblown, I would have no problem with unisex restrooms to start with. I do, however, respect people's desire for privacy, so - different strokes for different folks. Europe (at least the parts I've visited) seems to have a more mature attitude in general than America does. Puritanical morals and all...

In any case, violence is uncalled for. Also, while I am aware of "The Bystander Effect", it presents no defense for nonintervention, at least in my book.

By my way of thinking...now that you know about the bystander effect? You have to not be the bystander.

    So...

    Congratulations!

Wear your mental tin badge with pride...

What happens (I've done this at a nasty car wreck) is that when you stop to help, a whole bunch of other people do too.

ATM I run around with a headlamp and some rubber gloves in my purse for those late-night auto wrecks on my way home...yes there's been at least one-I was surprised the poor kid was only bleeding from a gash on the arm-I saw that truck and thought I was going to find a carcass in it. He'd bent that full-size pickup into a whole new shape.
I plan on adding a full first aid kit as finances allow.

And considering how crazy people seem to be lately? I am thinking about a concealed-carry...I don't have a good pistol for that, but I can use the one I have, it's just bulky. But reliable. Revolvers don't jam.
Having a loaded pistol pointed at you can make you reconsider a violent course of action.

you'd be surprised what is achievable. i don't think that things are usually the way they seem.

Are you talking about the young (fe)male victim at McDonald's, or this old male victim?

Yeah, one of the first things they'll teach you if you take courses in any kind of first response (first aid, OEC, EMT, etc.) is that you never bother addressing a crowd of bystanders for help - everyone will assume that someone else is going to do it. Instead, you single out one particular individual and demand that they, specifically, call 911 or whatever. They'll agree immediately and spring into action. If you stand there yelling "somebody call 911!" at nobody in particular, you'll just get a bunch of blank stares.

Except there was no man in "their" bathroom.

This kind of thing being why gender-specific bathrooms are oppressive. If you're transgendered, which one do you use? You face the possibility of violent assault or rape, if you choose wrong.

What do you think would happen if a F->M transsexual (who was identifiable as such) tried the same thing?

There are a variety of court cases pending in CA on the issue of where you put transsexual convicts. Pre-op M->F transsexuals get put in men's prisons. You can probably imagine the difficulties presented by arriving in a men's prison with breasts, long hair and waxed legs.

? I hadn't noticed any greater incidence of unisex bathrooms in Europe. Certain places even seem to forgo stalls entirely, in favor of fully-enclosed little rooms.

One thing that I did notice was a near-total lack of handicap access in Europe. Being wheelchair-bound there seems to sentence one to life as a shut-in - probably why I never see any wheelchair-bound people in public there.

This scenario is called "dissipation of responsibility" each individual does nothing thinking someone else will step in. There was a similar case in Brooklyn in the 80's where a woman was killed in public and no one stepped in. A fun fact is that the people who do nothing also make good subjects for hypnosis as 'follower' types.

I totally agree though, I would have stepped in rather than live with the guilt of not. The two bitches should be drowned in a cage, if this was stalin's russia they would be quartered.

I have one word for what I'd like to see done to those women. Vierendelen.

There is that...and it's not entirely mandatory you put yourself in harm's way to save someone else's life if you don't want to...just because I would.

    Just don't do nothing.

At least call police, or stay there and witness the attack/incident, and provide first aid when it's safe for you to do so. If you can hustle the vicim into your house, car, or even another room, and get them away from the attacker at no risk to you, do that.

    Okay...

I'm taking you off ignore, though I said I would not...you may yank people's chains at times and I'll keep that in mind...but you get this.

    *shudder*
Even in special populations they would not be safe from being raped.

Then again prison rape is another thing that shouldn't be allowed to happen and does.
