    No-one knows when the first textiles were used, since plant fibres do not leave fossil remains under normal conditions. There is an estimate, based on mDNA of human parasitic lice, that humans have been functionally hairless for at least 80,000 years. This implies the use of clothing for that long, or longer.

    Woven flax fibres would appear to be a likely candidate for the first textiles. Animal skins have to be preserved, by a tanning process or something similar, which is not as easy as it sounds. The Maori people of my country had clothing made of flax fibres, often with feathers interwoven. They did not use animal skins, in spite of large numbers of seals being available, since they did not know how to preserve skins.
