Amen to that Zanket: its not a scientist problem what knowledge he adds to the human race rather its the technicians that use that knowledge to make something. In the end sciences has been used to make much more good then bad and hopefully sciences will help us humans leave this planet and allow us to become something better then the talking apes that we are now.

we are not the most evolved....we actually still have some major structural problems, because we have evolved so recently.

    spare body parts? hmmmmmmm

think about that, you gonna chop off the arm of a fully grown human are you? i'm sure he or she would just love that!

No a clone can be made into stem cells and can be grown into individual organs and tissues! Skin, muscle, neurons have been grown in culture from stem cells. Even a organ as well, by assembling this tissues together. A Synthetic bladder made in this way has been tested and proven viable in dogs. Though a bladder is pretty simple the heart is next on that list of simplicity. No complete body needs to be grown form a clone. With proper treatment of the embryo it will become a tissue type or organ instead of a complete human.

(“Artificial” refers to non-biological, everything “Synthetic” refers to lab grown)

i think that the only complex organ they have produced so far was a penis of a rabbit if i am not mistaken. They took cells from the several different cell types that make up a penis and grew them in culture. They used some kind of artificial matrix to shape the new layers and then put them together back to the rabbit.

although the penis function was not 100% it was functional.

I suspect though that the grant application for research was not approved by a woman, but a man.

No they made a dog bladder about 4 years ago read it in a SA. Also they have ears and noses on rat backs... shaped and lab grown cartilage is already being used in people today.

I have a lesbian friend I showed that article to and she was quit interested in purchasing one of those!!! So I can see that synthetic penii being a very big market for unfortunate man and gay women that are soon to become hermaphrodites!

wrong wrong wrong, what will replacing faulty parts with new(identical) ones do to the human race? make it stagnant? yes

what is wrong? and how do you know we are not stagnant now? and do you think bodypart replacements will increase life expectancy? Can't replace a brain you know.

to achieve immortality will require very drastic changes to the human body in fact I advice just chuck it all together and buying your self some space in a UltraComputer server in a asteroid… preferably in another star system to stay way from the talking monkeys on Earth.

    should be banned

I think human cloning should be banned. It serves no real pupose. If humans die then thats obviously how it should be. We are already over populated, why make it worse? Creating more people and more people will only serve as a means to destroy earth further. And cloning people just for science purpose is wrong b/c as they are people, do they not have feelings as well? So what is the point really? to save a few people, to create more havock? Let us die in peace already... geez

BS! Utter BS! Ban this, ban that. Jesus! Why do so many people want a return to the dark ages?

We don't have to experiment on humans straight away. That never happens. Trials are always conducted on lab mice first. When its perfected there we try animals more closely similar to us like pigs and monkeys. There isn't going to be hundreds of mutant human babies draining the social security system. Get real! Cloning and genetics are the greatest breakthroughs in medical science. A blanket restriction on human cloning is ridiculous. Once again we are throwing away possibilities and I hope another country grabs the opportunity we've missed.

Cars were virtually outlawed in England at the turn of the century. The red flag law limited car development in favour of horses hoofs. As a consequence the British car industry never caught up with the rest of Europe or the US. History has thousands of such stories. Technology is a two edged sword. So what! Life is not about eliminating all possible risks. Its about balancing them. Banning any technology is criminal as far as I'm concerned.

What use has cloning? Body parts that aren't rejected are just one possibility. Somebody asked who might be interested in human cloning. One foreign leader is known to have a very deep interest in the subject and has ordered his scientists to pursue it. Saddam Hussein. Why? My guess is he see's the possibilities of life extension. One day he might want a replacement liver or lung and not be too thrilled about taking anti-rejection drugs for a less than perfectly compatible donor part. The technology for cloning isn't difficult to duplicate overseas. Do you think he will be worried about cloning entire bodies for harvesting? Another possibility is that a genetically identical son to shape and mould into his own image might appeal to him.

Also, we have to remember that other sciences are advancing. Medical sciences are the fastest. Neurology in particular. Twenty years ago it was unheard of to sew on a donor limb. In another twenty years or sooner we might be transplanting central nervous systems into new bodies. Brain transplants might not be science fiction anymore. People like Saddam and others not squeamish about ethics will have their lives extended indefinately through repeated body replacement. Meanwhile we are still talking about dolly the sheep.

In other words, if we ban the technology we will only be pushing it under ground. The Raelians are already proving this.

    Cloning for body parts

What about cloning for the body parts? I mean there so many people who need some kind of body part and a lot of them died before getting a transplant. So why not just make a clone for those who need a transplant?

In the US it seems that the religious conflicts some have with stem cell and cloning research is more important that the potential lives it may save. So we'll have to rely on other countries who are more interested in improving the transplant field of medicine to make the breakthroughs.

    Re: Cloning for body parts

hmmm...depends on how long it takes to grow for instance a new heart. What if it takes 10 years? An option would be to clone a whole new body and keep it in the fridge for spare parts. But would that ever be acceptible? SOunds quite macabre.
