Btw, it looks like some flooding. I had heard sewage lines broke, and saw some streets flooded. Were there any other sources of water? It looked like there was a nearby river, thought maybe a dike or something could have busted...
Most of the flooding is from Liquefaction and broken water and sewer mains (at least as far as I know anyway).
I'm 362km (224mi)* from the epicenter. I have friends and family in Christchurch, some of whom i've heard from, others of whom I haven't yet. *By road - less as the crow flies.
I hope your friends and family are okay Trippy. My husband and his parents and sister are still waiting to hear word on their father's family (my father-inlaw is from there and 2 of his sisters and their family still live and work around Christchurch). Their other family are in the North Island and are trying to get through as well with no luck. The images and footage is heartbreaking. I felt like crying when I saw the Cathedral. How they are going to recover from this... Especially after September's quake. And the timing.. September was bad but the timing meant no one was in the city itself when it hit. This one was also much shallower and much closer than the last one, so the ground shaking was a lot stronger than the last one. We heard through a cousin about the relatives we hadn't heard from, they're ok, shaken, they tried leaving town but couldn't because the roads were blocked due to liquifaction.

15 people found alive in CCTV building. State unknown.. Australian crew have arrived and are in action. 11:20am
Best wishes to all those affected in NZ. Couldn't have happened at a worse time of day. An aftershock such as this is gonna have aftershocks of its own, this has been just one in a series over the last year or so. With luck, the majority of the pressure has been released now, but we can't assume anything. Hope you guys have got the people you need to sort out the rescue, I know we in the UK are sending fire and rescue teams to the area.
At least with the frakking hurricanes you know when one's coming! it's not like "SURPRISE!" And tornadoes are a lot more pinpoint, so you just have this narrow belt of destruction... Christchurch Earthquake Just an update on the Christchurch Earthquake which happened yesterday at 11.50 am local time. 6.3 on the Richter Scale, shallow epicentre, only 5-6 km (about 3 miles down) beneath the port of Lyttleton. Because of the central location, much closer to Christchurch City, the time of day, the shallow focus, and the fact that so many buildings were in a fragile state from the September 4th 'quake, much more damage has been done to buildings. Also, of course, so far 75 known dead, and 300+ missing.
Plea going out for people not to drive around rubber necking as it is holding up emergency services 16:07.. Not to flush toilets as the waste water is not going anywhere. 6 arrests for theft and burglary ( Bastards )..
Police 100% certain no one still alive in CCTV building. Grand Chancellor Hotel (16/18 stories ) ready to collapse. Rescue teams pulled back for own safety reasons. Another person pulled out of the Pyne gould building.
