The recent hot story in town is Endosulfan pesticide causing infertility in males. I have read a number of reports claiming the harmful effects of this chemical. But I doubt the credibility of most of the news I have read online. Would want to know your opinion. Also would love to get more facts on the issue.
are you worried about your own infertility??? you can go to a fertility centre and get a Sperm Chromatim Structure Assay Test...that should ease your worry.. they will also be able to discus other potential hazardous chemicals that may affect fertility..
Yes, some pesticides - as well as other chemicals like BPA - imitate female sex hormones when they are ingested. These have done such as changed male crocodiles to female crocs and male fish to female fish in water supplies contaminated with the chems. It is suspected that these are also contributory to the development of hormonaly sensitive female cancers as well as decreased fertility in men. In Europe especially - where 1/5 of men are clinically sterile these days - the anandamide circuit in the male sexual system has been messed up badly. The primary suspect is now the mothers accidental ingestion of BPA and other chemicals in our environment while the male was in uturo. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! There are rural communities in the US where the water has been so contaminated with pesticides that it is no longer safe to drink.
tishakothari How were they exposed? Below paper should be found on google scholar, it looks at pesticide and level of exposure. This paper searched through the literature and reviewed the papers they found, this is their summary regarding fertility, male and female reference- Non-cancer health effects of pesticides Systematic review and implications for family doctors Sanborn et al. Can Fam Physician. 2007 October; 53(10): 1712–172
Endosulfan is an organochlorine compound that is used as an insecticide and acaricide. This colourless solid has emerged as a highly controversial agrichemical due to its acute toxicity, potential for bioaccumulation, and role as an endocrine disruptor. Banned in more than 63 countries, including the European Union, Australia and New Zealand, and other Asian and West African nations, and soon in the United States, it is still used extensively in many other countries including India and Brazil. It is produced by Bayer CropScience, Makhteshim Agan, and Government-of-India–owned Hindustan Insecticides Limited among others. Because of its threats to the environment, a global ban on the use and manufacture of endosulfan is being considered under the Stockholm Convention. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...6-WcDA&usg=AFQjCNFI1g2m5IqzMrouc6Aa8ARVgENWDg
Nice one cosmictraveler You gotta love wikipedia. The page has a section on reproductive effects. In general it is a tricky business having definite proof of the effects of pesticides on human health, especially long term chronic exposure.
Yes, I find WIKI very useful to get up to the minure information from. I only posted what I thought was useful for it will be banned soon world wide it looks like from this statement.
Endosulfan has no effects on male fertility Yes lack of honest people is surely a problem. I have read this article on Environmental Health Perspectives revealing Endosulfan’s Effects: Omissions and Flawed Data in the Saiyed et al report which publised Effects of Endosulfan of male fertility in 2003. You can check it on www . ncbi . nlm . nih . gov This one clearly proves that the data is flawed and that Endosulfan has no effects on male fertility. Hope this relieves you Tisha.
