What exactly would you call the music of the type they have on the Mechwarrior 2 redbook? Is there a name (besides novelty)for things like Weird Al and They Might be Giants?
Put a Little Birdhouse in Your Soul They've been calling that kind of music "novelty" since the days of Spike Jones or the Purple People Eater. I don't know what else to suggest. You could call Weird Al "parody," but you'd be slighting the fact that he and his band make smokin' rock and roll. Giants could be called post-punk/retro, and that doesn't quite seem to capture anything important about them. The Danish band Aqua comes to mind. The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo when they still went by that name. A lot of Zappa, especially his early stuff. Any of those songs would be perfectly suited to a skit on the Muppet Show. These people create music that makes us laugh, whether any particular song is metal, country, easy listening, or polka. "Novelty" seems like an appropriate name.
This is the kind of music I listen to. some classic and Dr. Demento, too. There have beenincidents at work because my co-workers don't seem to like it, and I fail to see the artistic merit of saying f*** and s*** every other word.
It's not usually a problem, as I can tune most music out. The problem came when someone decided to turn my music off and put his on, since he was getting tired of it(rather than a day, we do it by CD).
Sweet topic.... check out King Missile. I love this kind of music because it shows talent in a totally different form. Talent makes music good. Thats why I cant listen to mainstream country.
