Not at all... Jesus gave a major critique of religion during his famous Sermon on The Mount.

That doesn't mean he wasn't religious, he plainly talks about having the proper attitude when you give at the altar.

You really, really need to read Gemma, by Meg Tilly, it's about a 12 year old that's abducted and repeatedly raped by a 37 year old man who thinks he's in love with her and wants her to be his obedient wife, just like the Bible says.

    Spoiler alert:
She gets pregnant, which the guy is very happy with. He takes her to a hospital where they figure out what's going on and call the police. The police come and shoot him and arrest him, but don't kill him. Her mom comes to take her out of foster care, but then abandons her because Gemma could reveal that the mom's boyfriend was also raping her and pimping her out to her future abductor. Then she is adopted by a detective. There is a trial and the guy pleads not guilty, he uses the Bible to justify his crime to himself. That's as far as I got...

unfortunately it sounds like non-fiction, except for the adoption part.

    I understand it's partly autobiographical.

wow. you know if i was aware of someone being held captive and abused i'd be the first to come to their defense.

i can't explain the OT, except to say that it contrasts with the NT, which suggests jesus making a huge difference. and to reiterate, that in my experience, i have found god to be brutal.

No, we have found the followers of religions to be brutal as they mirror the brutality their scriptures exhibit.

Clearly, the OT is supposed to be the word of god, but since it's bronze age brutality no longer applies, it was allegedly changed. Of course, with the NT, only the names, places and players changed, the brutality remained intact.

Hence, that bronze age brutality is still alive and well, living within the congregations of believers. But, now they are saved!

YOU JUST SAID YOU SUPPORT THEIR CAPTIVITY AND ABUSE! That's what marrying your rapist would mean. I don't think you are a bad person, which is why your statements prove that it takes religion to make good people do bad things.

the question was directed towards me in a personal way, and i answered it with a personal response.

my point is, that my faith in god is personal, and i'm not trying to interpret some of the crazy shit in the OT. i explained the only ways i can relate to it, and i do trust god in spite of it.

when people get all bent out of shape about the OT being so brutal, i suggest to them to take a look around in the world and tell me what they see. i see brutality. so, it doesn't seem far fetched to me. does that make sense?

Religion and theism are indeed separate things. But religion covers more than just organised religions, which is what the OP seems to be referring to.

i also don't agree with you that religion makes good people do bad things. i think it takes bad people to do bad things, and they can rationalize it with all kinds of reasons, including religion.

If you don't agree with history, then there isn't much hope.
