Not far from 'ground zero' in NY there are plans for a muslim cultural center and will house a mosque. The development plans draws concerns from some of the family members of 9/11 victims:

Mike Burke's brother - a fireman - was one of the almost 3,000 who died as the World Trade Center's towers collapsed.

Mr Burke says families of 9/11 victims do not want a mosque by Ground Zero

Mr Burke wears badges commemorating the event on the lapels of his denim jacket.

It is not Islamaphobia, he insists - it's just that he and others do not want an Islamic institution nearby.

"I think the first concern for the families is that the religious beliefs of the terrorists who struck is going to have such a prominent place right around the corner from Ground Zero," he says.

"This is not an… anti-Muslim effort. It is understandably… emotional for them to be suddenly told that around the corner from where their loved ones were killed they're going to put a mosque."

The developer may not have the support of the family members but they do have the support of the local community who have backed the plans but there is still opposition. A group plans to march against the plans in what they call "Islamic supremacist intimidation". Not all of the victims families agree with this stance and support the cultural center they believe will help bridge a gap between muslims and non muslims alike.

Because all muslims are terrorists. Right.

    This is disgusting.

"It's not racism, he insists - it's just that he and others do not want black people living in their town."

Well yes TFL there is a lot of irony in his statement but I think they are just pussy footing around the issue which is that they associate the cultural center to the successful fall of the Twin Towers. If you think of it in that way then their reaction becomes a little clearer. I did wonder myself however why they chose that particular site for the center. A few blocks further uptown and no one would have cared at all, it wouldn't even have warranted a mention.

It's nothing more than sheer insanity to erect a monument to the stupidity and ignorance that religion represents, especially at the site of the tragedy that was caused by the aforementioned stupidity and ignorance.

All I hear is that xianity and islam preach "tolerance and love and blah, blah, flowers and bunnies, etc.". Well, neither of these religions preach tolerance for other religions. They are about one thing only - domination of peoples minds. The 911 slaughter was carried out by believers simply following the literal word of their book and their leaders.

And any of you believers out there who think you're not contributing, in your own humble way, to the continuation of the madness that slaughters innocents, well, you're just blinded by your own indoctrination. Look in a mirror and beg forgiveness from the millions you've collectively helped oppress and dispatch over the millennia.

    Fools.

That's not actually a parallel statement.

Jesus was a moron. Just like muhammad who came 600yrs later and convinced other morons to follow him.

I agree. Erecting monuments to mass murderers, right next to their victims no less, is disgusting.

Why does it matter where it is? The reaction to it is silly. It's a cultural centre. There were Muslims in those buildings as well who were innocent victims. What of them?

So all Muslims are mass murderers? If they had been Christian, for example, and a Christian Church was built there, you'd be saying the same thing?

Well. It's incredibly insensitive to try to build an Islamic cultural centre on the site of the 9/11 attacks.

Yep. I deplore all religion equally. And yes, all xians and muslims are, in the same way as any other "innocent" bystanders in a destructive group, responsible. They support with, tacit consent, the actions committed in the name of their shared ignorance.

They will tell you that it demonstrates the moral strength of the american people. I call BULLSHIT on that. Unless we're pretending to be something we're not (saints) then anyone with a shred of appreciation for reality will object to such a travesty.

Quite. It's a weaselly, disingenous tactic to affront someone and then claim that their acceptance of such an affront is testimony to their own good nature, precisely as it's not intended in that vein. The mosque - connected, I hear, to an imam with his fingers in the Flotilla Fiasco - is intended as a symbol of supremacism, not sympathy.

Isn't it ironic that those who believe in the notion of 'turn the other cheek' balk at something like this? Makes me chuckle on the inside.

Me too. After all the BS that religions have pulled throughout history, I'd have thought that - at a minimum - all of the xians would be extinct due to constantly "turning the other cheek" like a bunch of sheep. The islamic world at least attempts to practice what it preaches (you know, the same levels of horrific violence that the xian bible recommends).

I hear a lot about the sympathy and 'indigenousness' of Islam vis-a-vis the other major Abrahamic faiths.

Seemingly here it has fallen down rather badly. Would it seem moral if Pakistan erected a Pakistani cultural centre on one of the sites of the Bangladesh massacres? Yet here we are expected to believe it's innocuous.

i agree, should all christan churches be knocked down and banned in tassmainia because Bryant was a christan?

Are similar calls being made in Oklahoma about churches because the bomber there went to church?

It'd be much better if they used the money to erect an interfaith center.

A large interfaith center that has representative Buddhist Temples, Mosques, Churches, Synagogues, Shinto Temples, Hindu Temples - as many of the worlds different religions as is possible. THEN the members of all these different faiths can meet there every week or so, discuss which is the true faith and which is the wrong faith and kill those that are wrong - until only one is left standing. That can be the world's religion. OR, make it like a Big Brother reality show, where we the viewer watch and vote out those that we deem shit faiths, until only one is left in the house - that one becomes the World's religion, at least for that TV Season.
