Could get messy if they used cymbals like a discus, ... and maybe even interesting.

Until then, no, marching bands aren't sport.

That is a movie not reality....... In reality the Marching Bands are a collection of Musical geeks and outcasts. Well at least they were when I went to School some 30 or so years ago.

the title of "sport", espeicially in schools means much more than being called a sport. it determines the way your funding is distributed, the qualifications to lead, and your abilities and limitations within the group. in order to be a sport, you must be administered by the department of intercolegiate athletics (a national group with smaller state assiciations, usually titled *-AHSAA. let me extend to you what this means: ever single thing you do is directed by your athletic director/board. the music you choose to use, where you compete, the uniforms you wear, your limitations of how often you can practice, even weeks when your instructor cannot have any contact with you. most athletics are even prevented from leaving the state for camps or competitions. while the prestige in belonging to the crowd of so called athletes, you may find once you are their alot of the freedoms you had, will be gone. Not to mention, the AHSAA ideals of sport leave quite a bit to be desired anyway. for example, in michigan, bowling is a sport, lacrosse is not. which means bowling also has access to med facilities, lacross does not! that is one thing that does bother me about the AHSAA regime, it leaves coaches and students in a very stickey situation if you are one of those athletic clubs (membership is not optional, its who they choose to be a sport). however, i still beleive that the trade offs are better to not be a sport.

Not really, now its just people who want to succeed in life instead of being total pricks in football.

No, but I've seen actual marching bands before. It requires no athletic ability of any sort, so I wouldn't consider it a sport.

Just saying, Football players get knocked to the ground by 300 pound guys. Drummers move their arms and wrists. Plus i've never seen a drummer get injured, you see it all the time in football.

Drum Corp. is extremely difficult and you actually have to be in pretty good shape to walk around in predefined paths as quickly as they do with their musical volume.

I would consider Drum Corp a sport...it takes physical ability, it's a team effort, and there's a well defined winner and loser.

    Yes it is

The dictionary defines a sport as

an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

is marching band an athletic activity? Yes!
    Does it require skill? Yes!
Does it require physical prowess? Yes!
and is it competitive in nature? YES! (every been to a band compatioton?)

so marching band fits the definiton for a sport

so the answer is yes! marching band is a sport!

note: remeber it must be an athletic activity, so debate team for example is not a sport.

Ok, part of that might be true. But what about the competitions when people come just to see the bands compete? To see who wins or loses? It's definitely a sport.

I'm sorry, but there are 5 people in my band with concussions from this sport. 7 people have broken ankles, from this sport. You DO in fact need a physical exam. This is considered a sport, more than golf. More than chess, or gymnastics. It's athletic, it requires skill, and it's competitive. The 3 things in the definition of a sport.

It's based on reality. That movie is basically what happens in drumline.
