http://news.yahoo.com/video/local-15749667/19585803 It's a sad, sad day when students are barred from displaying American flags (on clothing, in this case) because it might anger those who are loyal to a foreign nation.
I hope a lawsuit does come of it. If the school wants to ban the wearing of national flags to diffuse racial tensions, so be it. But banning one shirt with a national flag on it while simultaneously celebrating the holiday of another nation is over the line, in my book. I don't have a problem with schools having codes for dress and conduct, but those rules should be made and enforced fairly.
I don't see what the big deal is. They didn't even get in trouble. Sounds to me like the vice-principal just got a little too touchy, probably thinking they were doing it just to blatantly oppose Mexico. But everyone including the high school itself disagreed with the decision so now everything is back to normal. What the vice principal did was dumb, but it is hardly a day worth crying about. I don't get it.
The fact that he did it at all suggests to me that the guy isn't fit to run a school with a racially/ethnically diverse student body. You can't play favorites like that, even if the kids were doing it to "blatantly oppose Mexico".
He would be allowed to do it, if they were purposely out to offend and excite violence on Cinco de Mayo. A group of Mexican students at a school nearby did just that by wearing black pride t-shirts with the symbol crossed out, they purposely did it to start fights both physical and psychological, so the shirts were banned and students suspended. However in this case the only one who should be getting a talking to is the vice principal, for being too sensitive for imaginary reasons. California has a lot of problems but this isn't really one of them.
Sorry: wrong to wear American symbols because those who - what? don't feel particularly American, and don't like Americans, apparently - might get offended? Were any Mexican symbols in evidence? Should I be angry if someone shows up in a red, white and green shirt? Should I complain? Should I strike him? Had the 'offended' students forgotten what nation they were living in?
It was a Cinco De May party day, so it's safe to assume that symbols of Mexico were present. I have no problem with the Cinco De Mayo festival, but the students and administration need to recognize that rules regarding national/ethnic pride should go both ways.
If the staff is worried about national/ethnic conflicts, they shouldn't have been having a Cinco De Mayo party in the first place. And the black pride shirt example doesn't apply. There's a difference between wearing something showing pride in your own group and wearing something that diminishes another group.
Cinco De Mayo is an American holiday. It's pretty much unknown in Mexico. The background for this is that it celebrates victory over the French invaders, who were the last army from another continent to attack the Americas. The United States supported Mexico in her struggle against the French, and these efforts against the colonial powers culminated in the Monroe Doctrine. Today, Cinco de Mayo is the Mexican-American equivalent of Saint Patrick's Day or Oktoberfest or Chinese New Year or any of the myriad other celebrations of American ethnic backgrounds.
I know that Cinco De Mayo is much more common in America, but the point is that it's a holiday to celebrate another nation's history. It may be primarily celebrated in America, but it's all about Mexico. And I've been told they have Oktoberfest in Germany and I know that Chinese New Year is celebrated in China (a few years ago I actually watched a Chinese New Year celebration on some cable channel from China).
HM, Cali is doing the same shit to you guys that we allowed Quebec to do to Canada... And the dude, who started all of this should be Booted out of The good Ole US of A
I wouldn't go so far as to boot him out of the country, but it doesn't sound like he's philosophically equipped to run that school if his default position in conflicts over national pride/identity is to punish the Americans. He should be fair and neutral. If symbols of national pride are allowed, they need to be allowed for everyone. If they're deemed divisive and insensitive, then they need to be banned for everyone.
The U.S. has become soft after many years of left-wing political correctness. Actions like this, that would have been considered treason decades ago, have become "ok" these days (in the eyes of leftists). Just look at the most recent terrorist bomber at Times Square, a U.S. citizen aiding and abetting the enemy, pretty clear treason. Yet how many people have called him a traitor in the media and elsewhere ?
You got a point there. We are living in an age where it's viewed as ok to bash the country you live in. It's sad but true.
I see it like this even if the students wore the shirts for no good reasons, what should have mattered is what their actions were while at school. If they went about their own business and wasnt trying to start something thru actions then the dumb ass principal should be disciplined.
Even if it wasn't intended as good, who cares.. I wonder if he gets insulted when he sees an American flag, in the USA. what he did was bullshit and childish, and he should at least be relocated, because he is setting bad examples for our youths. maybe a janitor position?
