Why is this forum so dead?

Well, IMHO it was/is the site drama that makes it seem like it is 'hopping', which is why Troll Central was usually pretty hot - there was always some kind of drama going on, an argument where both parties walked just this side of that dotted line, a question that could be innocent or could be a troll.

Like old Ben F. said, you trade in some freedom for security. That equates to some dull times on the old boards. Not that there is anything wrong with that.....

Gee, some lady that I don't know wants me to add her to my friends list and to show me some pix of her privates. :huh: All I have to do is click on the link in her email.......

You nailed it on the nose there. This is hardly even a scientific forum when there's at least one moderator that deliberately silences people from expressing other scientific views.
And worse yet, some of the other moderators support that behavior.
The "Sciforums" is more like the all-controlling Catholic Church of the Dark Ages than real open science with diverse views.
Ironic.

 

Here here... its the only way to have an intellegent forum... but i do kinda miss Varda an Opheolet an Shorty workin out ther issues ever now an then by callin each other the "c" (rimes wit runt) word... but alas... that word has been baned along wit anyone who uses it.!!!

A soluton was offerd so we coud have the bes of both worlds... that the cesspool be used for people to settle ther differences in un-intelegent ways... an people who broke the rules in the intelegent groops woud be baned to postin only in the cesspool for a period of time but managment rejected that idea... said to many people woud want to spend to much time in the cesspool havin fun insted of postin inteligent posts in the intelegent areas.!!!

Well i know i tried. my views are somewhat unorthodox but that is how people learn. If i put something out there that is from left field and makes poeople think i should not be ridiculed for it.

I dont know why the moderators support it or even if they do as i make no distinvction between a moderator and any other memeber. Realizing that they are human and have human weaknesses, but still...i cannot go along with the 'everyone jump on the bandwagon' mindset.

Similar to flat earthers who insist the world is flat and when soemone comes along and says 'hey, the earth is round' they would laugh and call them a fool. And that is sad but isnt that how it always is?

This is likely true, at least for a subset of the membership. The choice really depends on the site owners goals though. If they want lots of site traffic and drama, then the Cesspool should be a fully functional sub-forum with minimal rules and lots of "free speech". If they want serious scientific discussion...well, that change would be a distraction, at least to those who got bored with the serious part.

After a decade of thinking about it, I decided that the best way to deal with Trolls is to accommodate them, give them a place to be and watch them do their thing while restricting their access to other parts of the site or mandating they behave when posting elsewhere. You are going to have Trolls pretty much anywhere on the Interweb, better to have them out in the open IMHO.

Truly clever posters can work around word bans.....sine fragore podera...'if you must be obnoxious, be subtle'. Spitting, cussing and name calling simply scream out "insecurity" to me. My experience is that folks who need to do that all of the time have a poor self image and feel that others disregard what they say.

Of course, it is also my personal opinion that Grammar Police, Spelling Nazis and Thread Topic Police are varieties of Trolls. (No insult intended to any who fall within those parameters) While those all help to spice up threads, their intent and the resultant negative emotions they rile seem a tad counterproductive to this old poster.

The way it is now... people who "cross the line" of intelegent disucssion may be baned wit a sarcastic remark such as "enjoy you'r 3 day vacaton"... which prolly does little to cause the person to "want" to post mor intelegently as they fume over bein baned from speekin... but if they was jus baned (wit-out the use of un-intelegent smart remarks) to the cesspool for periods of time... they coud vent ther frustratons in un-itelegent ways (an be ignored by managment) an have a chanse to cool down... an be mor likely to "want" to change ther ways so they can post in the other areas.!!!

Even tho thers som room for improvment... for the mos part managment is quite respectful when exercisin ther moderator duties... but respect begats respect... an if a mod wants to be takin serously as somone tryin to improve Sciforums... they mus be respectful when exercisin ther mod duties.!!!

An sure mods are only humans an subject to error... but som are consistently blatent wit ther use of dis-respect in ther mod duties an escuses shudnt be made for 'em... at leas not by people who want Sciforums to change for the beter.!!!

EDIT: In the RW I have been pushed around by real gangsters, bikers, thugs, government lackeys, cops, CIA, FBI and Mossad. I have been shot at, ripped off, burned, stabbed and beat to a pulp. I have a vast education and a world of experience in more fields than most can shake a stick at. It is vastly easier to get rid of me than it is to keep me around and participating in a web forum. I take the attitude that I am a cheerful, willing contributor to any forum I participate in. I have encountered arbitrary 'moderation' of many kinds - "power tripping" in other words. All it takes is one rogue mod dicking around with me just one time and I am gone.

Understand this - to succeed, a web site must have high grade content. The high grade content comes from the members voluntarily. If you mess with the members, they don't contribute. If they don't contribute, your site goes down the sewer. That is how it works. One low grade mod can deuce a site, and any site owner worth his/her salt knows this, so the mods don't really get to skate on their responsibilities. They piss off the wrong member and the site fails. That is something to consider.
