I have found that coffee prevents you from sleeping, but it won't keep you alert, your eyes open. Nicotine works well, and it comes in candy form now.
A little trick they taught to bomber pilots back in ww2. If you feel yourself getting drowsy, tickle the roof of the mouth (soft palet) with your tounge. Wakes you back up for a bit. Don't know why it works, but it does. I've done it myself when driving.
drink a lot of coffee and then don't stop to go the bathroom. Having to pee for 100 miles keeps you awake

Your husband might be less pleased, it's one thing to wake up in your own pee, but it's entirely different to wake up in someone elses. Still, some people pay good money for that sort of thing.

I say the best thing to do is to get yourself a full days sleep, p.s ino this was posted about 5 years ago but for anyone who's on here for the same reason i am, (struggling to stay awake)Anyways. Best thing is to sleep a lot and drink lots of fruit juice, fruit, veg... healthy things so u feel really refreshed. DO NOT take any drugs, it will harm taking the drugs never mind taking them and not sleeping, Make sure you eat a lot through out these hours takes ur mind off sleeing... i also feel vix the cream for colds it keeps ur eyes awake if you shove a tiny and i mean TINY bit underur eyes, not too close it will sting but its got this nipping minty sensation and ur eyes just pop out! But make sure u sleep for atleast 2 full days... (obviously eating, and doing the toilet between) and eat lots and lots of fruit and healthy things... this makes u feel refreshed and awake... No drugs...
Tips to stay awake? Get yourself energy drinks and a computer with internet connection and/or PC games, blockbuster movies, etc.
You want vitamin B6 and gelatin. I would throw in some niacin just to be sure. Some people think you can't go wrong with caffeine, but I have had long experience, here: caffeine will not make you more alert. The reason you need the gelatin is that gelatin is rich in glycine, so it should alleviate some of the schizoaffective consequences of sleep deprivation. You will also be able to think more clearly. Eat the jello, or you will be actively hallucinating by the third day. Carbohydrates are generally good, but don't overload on them. If you do, you will find yourself, once again, easily distracted, and you will have difficulty maintaining any meaningful degree of focus. You want to balance different kinds of nutrients that you need for energy and concentration. It might be valuable to add some cheese to your munchings. Casein, a key protein in dairy products, is rich in tyrosine. Tyrosine is the amino acid that your body uses to produce dopamine, which you need in order to maintain alertness. Drink water to keep your electrolytes in balance. Have someone standing next to you with either a hot poker or a cattle prod. You are unlikely to need any further encouragement to not fall asleep. If you find yourself flagging anyway, try taking a twenty-minute nap: after one round of REM sleep, you should be feeling a bit more chipper.
