Can carbon fiber or a similar substance of similar properties be produced organically? Like say as a product by the body of an animal?

Nature has produced much more complicated materials in animals/plants/etc., so I don't see why it couldn't do carbon fiber.

How about a tree or a bush? They breathe in CO2 and out O2 and filter our CO2. Have you ever seen a tree? It's made mostly of carbon.

Ok but an animal breathes O2 and CO2......

Btw according to what I can see, Carbon fiber need to be created with artificial processes. No organism does that. Or am I wrong?

If by that you mean what most people understand Carbon Fibre to be, then yes, you are quite correct.

But nature on earth has its own version of carbon fibre like materials right?

well spider silk is stronger than steel cables of the same size

Ok... So Spider silk can really support spiderman's weight.

However has the mammals produced anything similar yet? I was thinking if they can use something like that to strengthen their bones.... Not adamantium of course!

REPLY: As far as I know, NO PURE CARBON FIBER is known to be produced by any organism. My knowledge is dated for sure. But, I can speculate as to why this may be true, IF IT IS TRUE. As simply as I can state it : The production of pure carbon fibers requires conditions NOT in the biologic environmental range. The chemical reactions that occur in life as we know it here on Earth all occur in an aqueous [ water ] environment for one thing. If I am wrong about this correct me. I think that fact alone precludes the production of pure carbon fibers in living organisms. If someone knows different by all means correct me. As far as I know water is ALWAYS the solvent and very often one of the reactants in biologic chemical reactions. These are my thoughts on this question. ...traveler
