But there will be Indians and Arabs... as the bad guys bent on genocidal domination of the world, Oh boy post 9/11 that so not done before! That movie just screams racism to me, an original all east Asian cast replaced with white heroes, evil arab/indian villains, and blacks and asains as minor background characters, it boils my blood thinking about it!

I went to see the movie as a night of pure entertainment. Not to pick it apart. Who gives a shit if the aliens spoke english. Who gives a shit if they wore loin clothes or were naked. When I pay to ride a rollercoaster I sit there and bitch about the ride being to short or who designed it. Dont really care how much money was spent building the rollercoaster or complaining about the design of the cars. Its pure entertainment. Its just a fucking movie. It does take movie making to another level and if you cant see thats too bad. Simple story lines, for the general intelligence of the world community ( 8 years ) I think its great. If it goes beyound that the audience could quickly get lost. So get over it. Dont go see the movei quiet bitching. and stay home.

Ok, I finally got to see Avatar on the weekend. First impression FREAKING AWESOME!. Jim Cameron really pulled out all the stops with this scifi caper, I was totally blown away by all the CGI, character animation has come a long way and the lip syncing was superb. The story line held my attention all the way through. I even dragged my wife screaming and kicking, and she ending up enjoying it.

Now for the downside. Once again Jim Cameron was trying to boost his ego by adding all the subtle political elements. Yes Jim, we all know about pollution and deforestation and global warming and how we must appreciate mother earth, so next time just stick to what you do best please.

Definitely one for DVD might even invest in a blue ray player now.

WTF? Just because we rate something as excellent doesn't mean it's flawless. All moves will be picked apart. Anytime people start criticizing a movie's flaws, it simply means that movies are far far far from as good as they can be. Ether do better or stop crying about people's responses.

It's just become the top grossing film ever.
    Surely it is the future.

I agree with you Jason, some of the elements were clumsy due to Cameron relying too heavily on his own ideas.
They were very unoriginal and derivative.
The idea of having a disabled man given freedom through a new body was very good, but not properly developed.

With $300 million to spend, the worlds best scriptwriters could have made it far better.

How will a film with a brilliant innovative plot as well as brilliant graphics perform?

That why I have hopes for battle angel, I found the plot and themes in battle angel very well developed and interesting, I'm talking about the first battle angel comic book series the second one is total crap. I hopes burned when James Cameron said is going to hold off on doing battle angel.

Perhaps Avatar will have a prequel and a sequel. Jake's previous soldier career on a devastated earth might be interesting.

Followed by a sequel in which the earth is renewed.

You know that one argument I don't buy, the earth won't be devastated, global warming will change the earth but it won't be devastated, if humans have the ability to travel to the stars they certainly would have had the ability the geoengineer the earth and maintaining its habitability.

I think I saw Battle Angel. Wasn't that the one where the USA was in the sky, and the guy was dreaming about going there? So he kept working and wokring really hard. And he mentioned that his brother built an illegal airship to get there. Actually, I only saw the beginning.

that was a cartoon based on the second volume of the first comic, there were 7 volumes and Cameron was talking of squeezing 2-3 volumnes per movie into a movie trilogy some time ago, but all that looks like it won't come to be because avatar has become too successful, and now he wants to make squeals of that shit instead, oh woe is me!

Is he really going to make sequels of Avatar? About what? White people come back to battle the smurfs?

I'll probably read both Battle Angel series. Alita and Last Order. They're really short. I think it's about how all the products get built in the shitty 3rd world country. Then they get sent to the USA which is in the sky. And everybody dreams about living in the USA. Wow it's just like real life!

Well to be fair last order was way beyond the earth to deal with that topic, and the floating city was not a good analog for the USA unless you think american citizens are all just garden puppets controlled by an AI? There were several story arcs about battle angel which made it good:
    1. Find who ones self was, in this case a former Martian (Martian as in humans who colonized mars) killing machine turned good.
    2. Finding and stopping a demonic mad scientist and the horrible creations he brought upon the world.
    3. Freeing the world from the sky cities control, which you could make as an analogy to ending empire rulership.
    4. and many more with side characters and their development and interaction.

One character I liked was the pet dog, he "dies" in the first volume after being sliced up but is brought back as a cyberdog, years later we see him again to save the day and sleep, well he sleeps alot because his doggy brain was not meant to live that long, see that kind of character development was funny, interesting and pure sci-fi

Now if you want to argue its unoriginal sure, everything been done before one way or another but battle angel is certainly more original than avatar by far.

Sorry, but this is utter BOLLOCKS! People have lined up to get Harry Potter, and have paid huge sums for a copy when it sold out. If you're not producing far superior results than Harry Potter or Avatar, you're living in delusion complaining about the market instead of cussing out the idiot in the mirror. If you're not not exceeding sales, it's not the market's fault. If I were to release my novel, it will blow Harry Potter and all these big budget movies out of the water.

    The visual effects are EXcellent.

The plot is only good at best and that may be a little generous.

Once the newness wears off I will regard The Abyss, Aliens and The Matrix as better movies. But for the moment it is EXcellent.

I haven't seen the movie so maybe this was addressed, but couldn't they have tunneled under the tree and gotten at the minerals underneath without disturbing it? Start off someplace far enough away from the natives so as to not piss them off and then tunnel to the area with the mineral you need. Kind of like slant drilling? They have the technology to travel across space, but they can't dig a tunnel?

Finally saw it, liked the 3D effects, liked the beginning and middle but the last 30 minutes had to much violence and explosions in it. They , to me, could have used the flying mountains to crush the invaders from the sky and that would have worked better than what they came up with. There were some inconsistencies as well, notice that everyone at the end was speaking English? But overall it is a very thought out story and done very. I gave it a very good because of the ending primarily and the few problems that I caught.
