    Haematite?
I assumed that it was one of those rare Earth magnets that you can buy as executive desk toys (simply based on the visuals of it being used as such).
Which would make it neodymium or samarium-cobalt.

I bought a small pack of neodymium magnets just 'cos a while ago. I got ten 10mm diameter x 5mm deep for a few quid. I use a few to attach stuff my magnetic notice board, and just play with the rest. I harbour a plan to buy some bigger ones, and use them to anchor a drive away awning to a day van, ....

These ideas are really good and I agree they'd make the story flow much better. BUT, you just lost 40% of the <25 American viewer.

Another 40% missed the whole point of the movie as they were contemplating the implications of clones and originals

That why I would not make a good script writer: I have ethics and standards and I'm not going to dumb things down for slack jawed hicks.

Yes, they do. But let's be fair:

Take your favorite 2D image (a work of art, a beautiful photo, whatever) and convert it into 1D. Then tell me it doesn't look stupid.
McGuffin, guys. McGuffin. It's a classic Alfred Hitchcock film technique.

That's like saying Children of Men's no-more-children scenario was unrealistic and/or improbable. The how and why wasn't the point. Did the lack of explanation on the infertility situation stop the film from being absolutely brilliant? No.

I realize this is SciForums, but this is like nitpicking Star Wars for its unrealistic science and unlikely scenarios.
True. But don't forget that not-overly-complex storylines are a trademark of James Cameron (or a brilliant marketing technnique, depending on how you look at it).

And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Examples?

Seen Aronofsky's The Fountain? Yeah. Or even better, try Mamoru Oshii's Avalon or Innocence (even Ghost in the Shell to some extent).

    ----------

Think I've done enough campaigning for Avatar here. Time to back away slowly and let the ultrarealists take over.

I think you have a point here. It's a film after all, we should take it as it is; a fantasy.

Yet, in Alfred Hitchcock example, the unnecessary details do not interfere the main logic of the story. Or in Star Wars, it doesn't matter how force should actually work -realistically-; since the story does not focus on this. However, the motives of the parties are not irrelevant in Avatar's story line. Imagine, if it wasn't for this precious material, humans and Nav'i wouldn't fight in the first place.

You got us, we were in a trekkie nerd off with are pants down (speaking for my self). Our nit picking was to appeal to our needs, the needs of intellectual elitists, the simplistic plot appealed to a wider audience, including us, in this respect the move is great.

I have to admit that, despite all the hype, I'm not remotely concerned with seeing this flick. I'm a big Sf fan in general, but from the ads I've seen, this just looks like a big cartoon to me....

Not so great dialogue? The dialogue in this movie was gawdawful. The story was nothing special. Not to mention incredibly cheap devices for keeping the plot moving. The bloody main character couldn't act if his life depended on it. There was nothing thematically profound about this movie. Action sequences were nothing special. The 3D was so garbage that it's an insult to 3D to even call whatever it was they were doing '3D'. The huge budget and all the effects, all for submediocre 3D. It was a very fun movie to watch. Well worth watching, but nothing special in terms of story. It's the exact same story as Pocahontas. Not to mention a copy of the book "Call Me Joe". In fact, Pocahontas really should get royalties.

It actually had less action than I expected. I think 3 action scenes in 2.5 hours is not that many... Supposedly Cameron left 20-30 minutes on the cutting floor so wait for the director's cut...

Well, Jake is basicly a traitor and should be executed as such...

He doesn't seem to be making any point. Avatar is far from a broad minded movie. Avatar was made by narrow-minded white people from a white culture. This movie came out of white culture, and was created from a narrow perspective. Just like somebody from another culture who only knows their culture's perspective would make a movie. It's a white-centric movie. Most of them are. Even movies that show other cultures tend to be very white-centric. Even TV shows like Heroes are extremely white-centric.

Rush Hour was funny because it made fun of alot of different cultures. But really broad minded movies tend to be unheard of.

Pretty silly argument, if I might say so. Among the soldiers there are all kind of colors and the movie is basicly about 2 different races. There is no point in mixing in more to get the point accross...

For 12 years work. The plot was predictable and not well represented and the script a bit shoddy. Beyond that it was just eye candy.

did you not notice how many of the alien flora and fauna were direct analogues of marine animals?
