Talk about a way to lose respect for people

I think they're just PO'd because its so damn boring over there. On the one hand, Spookz, thanks for pointing it out to us. To the other ... oh, heavens. Who cares. Maybe some of our more obnoxious posters can go make them miserable over there.

    Should have used a semicolon

Of course I'm a little conflicted.

On the one hand, I never would have known that people were trash-talking our beloved forum. That is, in a way, very important to me.

The "To the other" had something to do with "Why should we care?"

But then I realized that we may be able to pawn off some of our more obnoxious posters on that miserable lot. I just think they're pissed because its so boring over there.

Really, if you want to misinterpret and get defensive about anything we say, feel free. It just has no basis in fact. I don't like the cliquish attidute here, perfectly illustrated by this thread, nor do I think all the topics on every forum are particularly great, but when I mention it on my forum that doesn't mean I intend it as anything but honest comments on what I personally happen to like and dislike.

If you bother to read the thread, Colleptic's point was that there are some problems involved when forums become very large.

It's rediculus that you think I'm trash-talking sciforums, when I've actually mentioned it to a number of philosophy forums posters in threads and placed a link to sciforums in my site's links section.

Why would Collepilectic bring up the subject? If he/she did not intend to put down SciForums (my home away from home, which ironically is at home) what other purpose does it show?

Colleptic brought up the subject for the reason he mentioned in the first post -- to point out that there are some tradeoffs to having larger forums. A number of people have mentioned to me that they think the quality of posts is going down a little at philosophy forums, and some think that can be because off too many new members. That thread was a discussion about that, which is why most of the posts in the thread are about the topic highlighting plan and Aniket's suggestions, etc, and very little of it was actually about sciforums.

The post doesn't say "hah hah hah, we're better than them"... it says "there are some things I don't like about them, and I'm afraid we might head in that direction." I admit he should've known it'd upset some sciforumers, but he probably didn't think there'd be many reading the post. I may end up having to lock the thread due to that lack of foresight, but anyhow.

What somebody looks for in a forum is a personal choice, not everybody likes the same type of forum. I happen to enjoy sciforums, but that doesn't mean I think it's perfect. As you can see in that thread, people were making similar points about problems with philosophy forums.

Mallory Knox followed me there from here, I think that's enough obnoxious poster for a century or two.

Anyhow, the subjects of the sites are quite a lot different. Sciforums only has one small section for philosophy, and obviously has much more interest in being a general community site. Philosophy Forums doesn't have a particularly close knit community because that's simply not intended as a major purpose of the site... sure, I've come to know and like a few of the regulars, but that's just a side benefit. If you say it's boring there because it doesn't have the type of community sciforums has, then you're just not looking for the sort of forum which it's intended to be. It's a philosophy site, no more and no less. That doesn't mean I can't joke around, but it means that sort of thing isn't the primary concern.

I agree with what they say at philosophyforums. Most posters here are concerned with making a witty comment rather than adding something that makes sense. Lately I've been trying to post only when I believe I have something worth while for someone else to read, or if I have a question I want other people's input on. I might not be able to construct a perfect sentence, write logically, or analyze things...but without everyone doing what they do here, it wouldn't be Sciforums.com.

But the community here is one of the best I've ever seen. I can't deny this is one diverse and silly place. And almost forgot to mention, has a plethora of intellectuals who know their stuff and are willing to share.

I don't know if it means much since I rarely post here - but after I found philosophyforums, Hoth (Paul) soon was the one that directed me here!

We're not trying to bash sciforums, cause I like this place for what it is. Frankly, philosophyforums is alot more of a real-debate oriented site. We simply don't have that many posters that aren't averaging at least a hundred words a post - it's just not that kind of a site.

I love both forums now - although I just mostly 'lurk' here because I'm admittedly more prone to serious-type stuff where I can actually input something ... more than just a 'witty comment'. Really, I'm full of witty comments, I just save them for special occassions

Also, it seems to me that as you get more and more people comming to a forum, it becomes less and less serious, and sort of 'degenerates' towards 1 or 2 line posts on average and really nothing that I would consider of great value. It's probably just because of this site's popularity that it's not quite the same 'type' of forum as philosophyforums. And since it has a broader focus it attracts many more people that aren't looking for a debate site like philosophyforums. When you get a large general audience coming in to join something, the average IQ of all the members becomes closer to the average IQ of everybody with a computer, unfortunately

Overall, the forums are just different, and both good.

The two forums are of quite a different size.

15,000 posts there to 220,000 here. About 7%.

Their post count is the same as our thread count.

We have a large number of excellent posters here as well as a fair number of nutcases.

I'm not sure how anyone could perform an accurate comparison on content.

As Distortion says - they are just different and I don't how anyone could judge one as being better than the other. There are advantages to being large and different advanatages to being small. Hmm, does size matter?

On the one hand, it's one of those things where I feel just fine discussing my own family's problems, but people who don't know should watch their tongues.

To the other, such a spontaneous rip on another website ... geez, what did we do to piss him off?

I just couldn't resist the jab, so it's probably pure-D shite, but ... yeah.

    Thank ye kindly, sir.
