Why do we get addicted to something ? Whether it be a chemical, food, drug, game, person, or area ? Is it because it makes us feel good ? Solely for that purpose ? On another note. My father recently bought 96 cans of pepsi and I'm a known caffiene addict, but curiously, with a constant supply, I've been drinking less and less everyday. Is it possible to "Get bored" off an adddiction ? Or was I never really addicted in the first place. On that note What is an "addiction" ? What differentiates a "fetish" from an addiction ?
I think you were never really addicted to it then. On a side note, I quit caffeine a couple of weeks ago. I had a headache for 4 days straight.
or to distract us from our feelings of worthlessness.. addiction and habit are two seperate things that often go together.. some things can get old.. i would have to say control..one controls you the other you control..
I think it should really be termed that there is two types of Addiction, Physical Addiction and the one that NMSquirrel mentioned Habit. Physical Addiction is usually caused when someone take a drug for a duration which causes their bodies metabolism to respond to it as stimuli. Without that drug being used, the body tries to regress back to the absence of the drugs use but unfortunately it will have grown accustomed to the drugs stimuli and therefore generate an effect to signal it's absence. This effect is what identifies Physical Addiction and can only be dealt with by going cold turkey (Staying off the drug even though the side effects) or through lowering the drugs dose to "wean" off them. Habit is Psychological, although it still has chemicals inducing it. These chemicals of course are naturally produced by the brain and can generate a milder effect similar to the Physical Addiction. For the most part though if someone doesn't do a particular task that's a "habit", they can however handle it. although there are of course cases which prove this to be untrue, like those that suffer Obsessive Compulsive Disorders or in some cases Autism, where if a task isn't done or isn't done properly it can trigger and effect which the person is not fond of, which is much like a Junkie not getting a fix. Why do us humans get Addicted or Form habits? In short, It's all down to the reward centre within the brain. People get stimulated there for many reasons "positively", not all of those reasons are necessarily the right reason, this can be down to education, upbringing and just down to how psychologically sound they are. The reward centre can be stimulated by Drugs or just activities. Every time a person is elated after winning some money, getting a job bonus, getting interest for someone they would like the attentions of, the reward centre is stimulated. This is because the brain produces chemicals naturally and for the most part drugs are used just to enhance the production of those chemicals. This "general purpose" reward centre is the main reason why there is so many people addicted to so many different things. While it generates Euphoria at times, it can also cause a persons anxiety or depression etc. The main reason for this is because there is only so much stimulation that the area of the brain should do before it requires rest, over stimulation will tire it. (In this particular metaphysical reasoning, I'm not suggesting the brain needs sleep but the fact that the chemicals that are absorbed have to be "flushed" and this usually requires sleep to do so. As flooding the region with the same chemical too long lessens the sensitivity of the reward centre for stimulation.)
Totally dependant Draqon. Can you live without it? If you don't get sexually involved with someone does it cause physical discomfort or just mental discomfort? Does it get to the point that you feel you have to go out and rape someone? (That would pretty much be up there as an extreme for "physical addiction", in the sense that "Mentally" they should seek help)
You get addicted on things because deep down your life isnt what you thought it would be, and your trying to fill the gap. Problem is, this only tends to make things worse.
