I think it's disgusting and appalling.

Well her new nose does look cute, but then so did her old nose. Of course being raised with a mother like this, she'll probably be just as vain when she grows up... it's exactly the same as circumcision. A parent doing what they think is best for their child. It is true that at 8 she healed much faster than she would have at 30 and her bones were easier to shape. Her mother's logic, was that her daughter would most likely get a nose job anyway because she had her father's nose so it was best to fix it before she ever had to deal with the humiliation of having an ugly nose. Since procedures like these go under the guise of what is best for the child they aren't illegal. But there is no disguise to hide docking/cropping under, which is probably why it's been made illegal in some places.

It's not even close to the same thing.

So a parent forcing a child to eat healthy is the same as a nose job?

There is absolutely NO argument that can be made for elective plastic surgery on a child's nose could be for any reason but vanity and will instill in that child the same gross insecurity the mother obviously has, but to a much worse degree.
There is a vast difference between following religious customs and doing what you feel is healthier for the (even if that is misguided) and teaching a child that it was born ugly and needed to recify that with surgery at 8 years old!

While I have mixed feelings about circumcision, the intentions behind it and giving an 8 year old child a nose job are two completely different animals.
It is astounding to me that anyone could think that elective plastic surgery on children is acceptable on any level.
    Vile.

I understand why it would be appalling, but I understand why it is legal.

Some people live in a culture where a perfect nose is important. Their child having a 'bad looking nose' could be more disadvantageous than their child having a breathing obstruction.

Well I disagree, with that. Plastic surgery can be for medical reasons, like a boy with a birth defect that kept him from breathing out of his nose so he had plastic surgery to fix the problem and now he can chew food without his mouth being open and he doesn't suffer from a dry throat all of the time.

A circumcision so the other boys in the locker room won't laugh (maybe) and a nose job so her daughter wouldn't be made fun of (maybe) seem like the same thing to me. Both parents are doing it so their child won't be different or made fun of in school.

A circumcision so that the boy will have a smaller chance of contracting an UTI or HIV is similar to a parent having their daughter's breasts reduced at 12 or 13 so she won't experience discomfort and/or back pain due to her breasts being too heavy when she grows up. Both are doing it for some medical benefit for the child.

Circumcision is cosmetic surgery as far as I can see, so there isn't any difference I can make out.

I am referring to cosmetic surgery, not medical, if you can't see the difference, then there is nothing to discuss.

If that's why you think parents are getting their kids circumsized, then I suggest you actually talk to pepole who do it, because you are misinformed - unless, of course, you prefer your ignorance because it is easier to make such ridiculous arguments.

Again, I am referring to elective cosmetic surgery, which you already stated was the reason she got it done. YOU said there was no medical reason at all. I don't believe you honestly can't see the difference between a child having difficulty breathing and a mother thinking her child is ugly because she has her father's nose and wants her to be cuter.

I may be ignorant about a lot of things, but circumcision is not one of them.
I do honestly know why people get circumcisions, I used to help talk them through it, when I work as an aid at a health clinic. The locker room thing is one of the reasons many people do it, but more commonly it's because the father is circumcised and so the son won't be scared or confused. Some others: is so it'll be easier to clean, because they think an uncut penis is ugly, it'll look cleaner, or my favorite "You mean we don't have to circumcise him? I thought it was the law or something." Most new or soon to be parents don't even know about the lower chance of contracting UTIs or the new HIV study until the doctor tells them. And that goes for both the educated and uneducated people.
The crazy woman I knew rearranged her kid's nose for vanity's sake, but so do lots of parents who circumcise and don't tell me they don't because they do. For every reason a parent might circumcise their son there is an equivalent reason they might let them or make them have plastic surgery. Religious/cultural beliefs are the only exception unless you count female circumcision or sex changes.
