Some years ago I saw a documentary (PBS as I recall) about a group of 'reenactors' over in England that lived in a recreated iron age village for a year. They started with no iron tools. By the end, they managed to smelt and forge an assortment of iron knifes, hoes, axes, etc. And also showed a 'profit' on their original stock of seed and the like over that needed to feed themselves, iirc. I suspect that progress could be very rapid _if_ you have the knowlege. They showed at the very least you should be able to jump directly to the iron age. That's my guess anyway.

The first generation would need to write as much down as they can remember, and then they would need to teach the second generation to read.

If it is humans we are talking about the only technology that would matter is weapons. The first dude to have a gun will be a king and may destroy all other technology so he can stay a king.

History is known to repeat itself.
